Antananarivo sits on a series of ridges and valleys, and your hotel location will define your entire trip. Stay on the high ground. Antaninarenina, Ambohijatovo, or Isoraka. and you're walking distance from the Rova, Lac Anosy, and the restaurants around Rue Andrianary Ratianarivo.
The lower-town neighborhoods below Avenue de l'Indépendance are cheaper but noisier and harder to navigate on foot. We've seen first-timers book there for the price and spend half their trip in traffic. Don't do it. Pay an extra $20/night and stay on the hill.
Getting around Antananarivo without losing your mind
Tana has no metro and no tram. You're relying on taxis, taxi-bes, or your own feet. Taxi-bes run fixed routes across the city for 500-1,000 Ariary. dirt cheap, but chaotic if you don't know the numbers. Route 135 connects the upper town to Analakely. Taxis cost 10,000-20,000 Ariary per ride and are far easier.
Traffic around Analakely and the junction at Ambohijatovo roundabout is brutal between 7-9am and 5-7pm. If your hotel is on the ridge, walk when you can. The 15-minute walk from Antaninarenina down to Avenue de l'Indépendance beats sitting in a taxi for 40 minutes on a bad day.
Budget vs. luxury in Antananarivo: what you actually get
At $45-70/night in Isoraka you get a clean room, usually hot water, and a guesthouse atmosphere. Sakamanga is the gold standard at this level and has been since the early 2000s. Mid-range at $100-180/night in Antaninarenina or Ankorondrano means reliable WiFi, air conditioning that works, and breakfast.
Luxury in Tana. Palissandre, Tamboho, Domaine de Fontenay. is genuinely world-class. These aren't inflated prices for average rooms. You're getting boutique design, serious gardens, and staff ratios you'd expect in Paris. At $155-420/night, they're worth every ariary.
When to visit Antananarivo (and when to stay home)
The dry season runs May-October. June and July are the sweet spot. clear skies, temperatures around 14-20°C, and the city looking its best. June 26th is Independence Day and the whole city celebrates around the Rova and Mahamasina Stadium. Book hotels 8 weeks ahead if you're going then.
January-March is cyclone season. Rain is heavy, roads flood in the lower town, and some guesthouses near Isotry genuinely suffer water damage. It's not dangerous in the hill hotels, but it's miserable. Hotel prices drop 25-35% though, so if you're on a tight budget and flexible about weather, it's workable.
Neighborhoods to avoid (and why we say so)
The area immediately around Gare Soarano on Boulevard de la République is not where you want to base yourself. It's noisy from 4am, petty theft is common after dark, and the hotels there charge almost as much as better spots in Antaninarenina. The price difference doesn't justify the tradeoff.
Isotry, in the lower town, is a working-class residential neighborhood with almost nothing for visitors. Some very cheap guesthouses operate there under $30/night. We've seen this mistake hundreds of times. travelers go for the price and end up with 45-minute taxi rides to everything. Skip it entirely.
Eating and drinking near your hotel in Tana
The best restaurant concentration is around Rue Rainitovo and the streets off Antaninarenina. Le Rossini and Kudeta are within 5 minutes walk of most hill hotels. For street food, the stalls near Analakely Market on Avenue de l'Indépendance serve romazava and ravitoto for under 3,000 Ariary.
Hotels in Ivandry are 15-20 minutes from the center by taxi, but Ivandry itself has a solid local restaurant scene along Route d'Ivandry. If you're at Tamboho or Palissandre, you don't always need to go far. Ask hotel staff for their actual personal recommendations. not the tourist-facing list at reception.

These two ridge neighborhoods sit above the city noise and within walking distance of the Rova, Lac Anosy, and Avenue de l'Indépendance. Hotel Colbert on Rue Prince Ratsimamanga has been Tana's most recognizable address for decades. it's 8 minutes walk from the Analakely market and has the kind of polished reliability that earns its Most Popular badge honestly.
Isoraka is slightly lower on the hill and a touch more affordable. Sakamanga Hotel on Rue Andrianary Ratianarivo is the standout here: $45-70/night, a genuine traveler institution, and the best budget value in the city. The neighborhood has independent restaurants, craft shops, and enough local foot traffic to feel like real Tana.
Hotel Tana-Jacaranda sits in Antaninarenina and punches above its $65-95/night price point. It's quieter than Colbert, smaller, and feels more like staying at a friend's well-run guesthouse. The walk to Andohalo Cathedral takes about 6 minutes from the front door.

Ivandry sits in the northern residential belt of the city, about 20 minutes by taxi from Antaninarenina. It's where Tana's expat community and upper-tier business visitors stay. Streets here are wider, greener, and quieter than anything in the center.
Tamboho Boutique Hotel and Palissandre Cote Ouest Hotel and Spa are both in Ivandry, and both are worth the price. Tamboho is $135-185/night with 17 rooms, a garden courtyard, and service that most $300/night hotels elsewhere wouldn't match. Palissandre at $155-210/night adds a spa and pool. the highest-rated hotel in the city outside of the full luxury tier.
The tradeoff is distance. You'll need a taxi for almost everything. Budget 15,000-20,000 Ariary each way into the center. If you're here purely to relax or on a business trip with a car, it's ideal. If you want to walk to dinner every night, stay in Antaninarenina instead.
