Area 43 vs City Centre: which side do you want to be on?
Area 43 is where most visitors end up, and honestly, that's the right call. The Crossroads complex on Presidential Way has restaurants, a gym, and a supermarket. Latitude 13 is a 3-minute walk from there, and the whole strip feels safer and easier to navigate than most of central Lilongwe.
City Centre near Capital Hill is all government buildings and NGO offices during the day, then almost dead at night. If your work keeps you on United Nations Drive or near the Reserve Bank on Kamuzu Procession Road, stay in City Centre. Otherwise, base yourself in Area 43 and take taxis when you need to.
Getting around Lilongwe without losing your mind
Minibuses are everywhere and cost 300-700 MWK per ride. They're packed, they don't run to a timetable, and the routes are unwritten. you ask and you figure it out. For Area 43 to Old Town Market, expect 20-25 minutes in a minibus or 10 minutes by taxi for around $4.
Download Taxify before you arrive. It works in Lilongwe, covers most areas, and gives you a price before you commit. For the airport run, negotiate a flat fare of $15-20 with a driver at the arrivals hall. it's cheaper than calling a cab from your hotel.
What to actually expect from Lilongwe hotels
Power cuts happen. Even mid-range hotels in Area 43 lose electricity 2-3 times a week during the rainy season. Ask specifically whether your hotel has a generator and whether it covers air conditioning, not just hallway lighting. We've seen this catch people off guard more times than we can count.
Wi-Fi speeds are inconsistent city-wide. The best connections we found were at Latitude 13 and Sunbird Capital. If you're here for work, bring a local SIM with data. Airtel and TNM both sell prepaid bundles at the airport. 10GB for around $5-8 is standard.
When to book, when to wait, and when to splurge
The African Union and SADC summits bring government delegations that book out every mid-range and luxury hotel in Lilongwe with very little notice. If you're traveling between June and September, check whether any regional summits are scheduled. hotel prices in Area 43 can jump 40-60% in a single week.
The low season runs November through February. Prices at places like Crossroads and Golden Peacock drop noticeably, often 20-30% off rack rate. Book direct and ask for the rainy season rate. Most hotels will give it if you just ask.
The best food near your hotel (by area)
If you're in Area 43, you're already in the right place. Latitude 13's restaurant is genuinely excellent. don't skip it just because you're staying there. The Crossroads complex has a good range too, from pizza to Malawian grilled chambo fish. Smoking Joe's on Presidential Way is a local favourite for burgers and cold Kuche Kuche beer.
Old Town has cheap eats around Malangalanga Road and the market area. Expect rice and relish for under $2. But go for lunch, not dinner. the area quiets down fast after 6pm and you'll have trouble finding a taxi back.
Luxury in Lilongwe: what you actually get for $280+
Mchesi Hills Lodge is in a class of its own. It sits on elevated ground near Mchesi Forest Reserve, about 20 minutes from Area 43, and the views over the surrounding hills are the real selling point. At $280-400/night, you're paying for seclusion, excellent food, and a level of service that doesn't exist elsewhere in the city.
Kumbali Country Lodge in Area 56 is the other luxury option worth taking seriously. It's $165-220/night, which makes it exceptional value at this level. The gardens are real, the pool is properly maintained, and the lodge-style rooms feel genuinely different from a standard hotel. It's about 25 minutes from Capital Hill but the trade-off is very much worth it.

Lilongwe has no metered taxis. Every fare is negotiated. From the airport to Area 43, $15-20 is fair. Within the city, most trips run $3-7.
