Phase 1 vs Phase 2: which side of Hulhumale should you book?
Phase 1 is the original heart of Hulhumale and where most visitors should stay. Streets like Aage Goalhi have cafes, pharmacies, and grocery shops within a 5-minute walk of any hotel. The beach is the anchor: a long, walkable stretch of white sand running along the western edge, easy to reach from Phase 1 Central in under 10 minutes.
Phase 2 is newer, bigger, and still being built. It suits travelers who want quieter surroundings, larger rooms, and don't mind being 20-30 minutes walk from the Phase 1 beach. Coral Inn Maldives and Canareef Resort are both out here and worth it. just don't book without knowing what you're trading off.
The airport hotel question: Hulhule or Hulhumale?
If you have a 6am flight or a long layover, Hulhule Island Hotel is the only real answer. It's right on the airport island. walk from your room to the terminal in under 10 minutes, no ferry, no taxi. Rates at $150-230/night reflect the convenience premium, but it's worth every dollar when you're catching the first departure of the day.
For stays of 2 nights or more, base yourself in Hulhumale Phase 1 instead. The ferry to the airport from Hulhumale Ferry Terminal runs regularly and costs about $1. You get actual streets, cafes, and a real beach. things Hulhule Island simply doesn't have.
Hulhumale on a budget: what $55-110/night actually gets you
Two hotels make the budget bracket work here. Hulhumale Hotel at $55-85/night is the floor: Phase 1 location, basic but clean, and within 15 minutes walk of the beach. Calm Inn Hulhumale at $75-110/night is our Best Value badge holder. the step up in room quality is noticeable and the Phase 1 Central location near Aage Goalhi is excellent.
Skip the very cheapest listings near the southern Phase 1 industrial area. The savings aren't worth the noise and the extra taxi rides. For $10-15 more per night, you're in a completely different part of the island.
Crossroads Maldives: worth the splurge?
SAii Lagoon and Hard Rock Hotel at Crossroads are not Hulhumale hotels in any practical sense. They sit on Emboodhoo Lagoon, 15 minutes by speedboat from the airport, and operate more like classic Maldives resort islands than the urban stays on Hulhumale. Prices start at $280/night for SAii and go to $600/night at Hard Rock.
But they're vetted here because a lot of travelers combine a Hulhumale city stay with 2-3 nights at Crossroads on the same trip. SAii's rating of 9.0 and Hard Rock's 9.1 are the two highest on this list. If the budget has room, don't second-guess it.
Getting around Hulhumale without a taxi
Phase 1 is genuinely walkable if you stay central. The Phase 1 beachfront strip to the ferry terminal is about 20 minutes on foot along the main coastal road. Taxis within Phase 1 cost $2-4 for most journeys and are easy to flag near the ferry terminal or Central Park.
Phase 2 is bigger and harder to navigate on foot. Budget $4-6 for taxis between Phase 2 and Phase 1. The free shuttle from some Phase 2 hotels to the ferry terminal is worth checking when you book. Bikes are rentable near Central Park for around $5-8 for a half-day.
What Hulhumale locals know that tourists don't
The Phase 1 beach fills up with Male' locals on Thursday and Friday evenings. it's lively and fun, but not a quiet sunset spot those nights. For a calmer beach experience, head north toward the Phase 1 North section near The Residency Maldives, where the sand is less crowded on most days.
Eating outside your hotel saves real money here. The short-eats shops near the Hulhumale Ferry Terminal serve fresh hedhikaa for $1-3 a piece. way better than hotel breakfast buffets priced at $15-25. Most hotel restaurants are fine, but they're not the reason to be in Hulhumale.

Arena Beach Hotel earns the Best Location badge here for good reason. It sits on the Phase 1 Beachfront strip at $110-165/night, and you don't need a taxi to reach the water. Calm Inn Hulhumale in Phase 1 Central at $75-110/night is a 10-minute walk from the beach and has the better price-to-quality ratio of the two.
Hulhumale Hotel at $55-85/night and The Residency Maldives at $135-200/night round out the options in this zone. The Residency is up in Phase 1 North, slightly quieter, and suits business travelers who want a proper desk and reliable Wi-Fi over beach access.
