The Royal Road (B13) runs like a spine through Grand Baie and everything you read online will tell you to stay 'near the beach'. but that's vague to the point of useless. La Cuvette beach is in the centre, Pereybere beach is 2 km north, and Mont Choisy beach is 3 km south. Where you stay relative to these three shapes your entire trip.
Grand Baie Village and the Coastal Road area are the busiest and priciest per square metre, but the beaches here are more crowded and the traffic noise is a real issue. Pointe aux Cannoniers, about 4 km from Grand Baie centre, gives you a quieter peninsula with better snorkelling and calmer roads. Anse La Raie, another 4 km further north, is genuinely remote. ideal if you want a resort bubble, less so if you want to explore independently.
Grand Baie on a budget: how to do it right
You can stay in Grand Baie for $55-85/night without suffering. Pereybere is your base: Coin de Mire Attitude sits right there, the local restaurant scene on Pereybere Road is excellent, and the beach is better than the main Grand Baie public beach. Most people spending $200/night on Royal Road are paying for a name and a lobby, not a better trip.
Eat at Chez Ram on Royal Road for under $10 for a full Creole meal. Skip the hotel breakfast buffets at mid-range properties. they charge $15-20 per person for food you can get at local bakeries on Coastal Road for $3. The bus from Pereybere to Grand Baie centre runs every 20-25 minutes and costs under $1. You don't need a taxi for most daytime trips.
The luxury end: when it's worth splashing out in Grand Baie
Zilwa Attitude at Anse La Raie and Canonnier Beachcomber at Pointe aux Cannoniers are in a different class from everything else on this list. Zilwa sits on a private lagoon, 12 km from Grand Baie centre, and the seclusion is the entire point. Canonnier has a golf course, a private beach cove, and restaurants that could hold their own in any major city.
At $280-490/night, these aren't impulse buys. But if your trip is 7 nights or less and you want something genuinely memorable, the luxury end here is exceptional value compared to Maldives or Seychelles at similar prices. Book direct. both hotels offer better room categories and free transfers when you skip the third-party sites.
Grand Baie for families: what actually works
Families consistently do better staying south of Grand Baie centre, around Mont Choisy and Trou aux Biches. The lagoon there is shallower, the beaches wider, and the roads quieter. Casuarina Resort and Spa in Trou aux Biches has one of the most genuinely kid-friendly setups on the north coast. not just a token splash pool, but supervised activities and a beach that's safe for younger kids.
Avoid booking in Grand Baie Village itself with kids under 10. The beach by Grand Baie Bazaar gets jet-ski traffic that makes swimming sketchy. Ylang Ylang at Mont Choisy is a solid mid-range family option at $110-165/night, 5 minutes walk from the beach and with large enough rooms that you're not stacking everyone on top of each other.
How to avoid the biggest Grand Baie hotel mistakes
We've seen this mistake hundreds of times: booking a 'beachfront' hotel on Royal Road without checking the actual map. Half of those properties are fronting a road, not the ocean. Always look at the satellite view and check walking distance to La Cuvette, Pereybere, or Mont Choisy beach specifically. don't trust the listing description.
The second mistake is booking too central for a relaxing trip. Grand Baie Village on a Saturday night is loud until 2 am. If you're not here for bars and late-night restaurants, book in Pointe aux Cannoniers, Pereybere, or Anse La Raie. And avoid December 20 through January 5 unless you book at least 4 months ahead. prices double, the beach is packed, and availability at good hotels disappears fast.
Grand Baie for couples: the honest guide
Skip the big all-inclusive resorts if romance is the goal. Hibiscus Boutique Hotel in Grand Baie North is small, personal, and 8 minutes walk from the beach. the kind of place where staff remember how you take your coffee by day two. Kuxville at Pointe aux Cannoniers is quieter still, on a peninsula with sunset views that are legitimately special.
For a full splurge, Zilwa Attitude at Anse La Raie is the one. Private beach, overwater dining, and a lagoon that glows turquoise on a clear morning. Book a garden suite or lagoon room. the standard rooms are fine but the upgrade is a material difference.
