Le Morne Village, about 15 minutes walk northeast along the coast road, is scrappier and honest. Le Morne Beach Bungalows here gives you a real community feel for $70-95/night. But if you came to Mauritius for that postcard lagoon, staying off the peninsula is a compromise you'll notice every morning.
How to avoid getting burned by misleading 'beachfront' listings in Le Morne
This is the most common complaint we see. Some properties in Le Morne Village and along the B9 coastal road advertise 'sea view' or 'beach access' when they're actually 400-600 meters from the waterline with a road in between. We've seen this mistake hundreds of times.
The safe bet: only trust peninsula addresses. If the listing shows a Le Morne Village or La Gaulette address, verify the exact walking time to the beach before booking. Any legitimate beachfront property will give you a specific number: '2 minutes walk to the lagoon.' Vague language like 'close to the beach' is a red flag.
Getting around Le Morne without renting a car
The peninsula resorts are fairly self-contained, so if you're staying at Dinarobin, Lux Le Morne, or The St. Regis, you genuinely might not need a car at all. Most resorts offer free shuttle service to La Gaulette village, which has a few restaurants and a small supermarket. The bus stop on the B9 near Le Morne Village connects to Black River (Rivière Noire) for around $1-2.
For day trips to Chamarel's Seven Coloured Earths or Black River Gorges National Park, rent a scooter from La Gaulette for around $25-35/day or take a shared taxi from the Le Morne junction. Ubers operate across Mauritius but supply near the peninsula is thin, so pre-arrange your ride at least 30 minutes ahead.

Day trips worth doing from Le Morne
Chamarel is 20 minutes by car east on the B100 road and packs in the Seven Coloured Earths, Chamarel waterfall, and the Rhumerie de Chamarel distillery. Do it on a weekday morning before the tour buses from Port Louis arrive around 10 AM. Budget $40-60 for a half-day taxi tour including the return.
Black River Gorges National Park entry is free and the Macchabée Trail from the Petrin Visitor Centre takes 3-4 hours return. It's a genuine forest hike with Mauritius kestrels and pink pigeons if you're quiet. From the peninsula, the Petrin trailhead is about 35 minutes by car via the B88.
Le Morne vs. Flic en Flac: making the right call
Le Morne wins on scenery and water quality. The peninsula lagoon is calmer, clearer, and has zero jet-ski traffic compared to the Flic en Flac stretch. But Flic en Flac's Royal Road has actual restaurants and bars you can walk to at night, which Le Morne completely lacks unless you're spending at a resort restaurant.
Our honest take: first-timers to Mauritius should base in Le Morne. Repeat visitors who know what they want from a beach holiday, and want to eat well for less money, often prefer Flic en Flac. Sugar Beach and Maradiva at Wolmar Beach split the difference nicely, sitting $175-320/night with better food access than the peninsula without sacrificing beach quality.
