If you want to actually explore Port Louis on foot, Caudan is the one neighbourhood where that's realistic. The Blue Penny Museum is 4 minutes from Le Suffren Hotel, the central market on Farquhar Street is 10 minutes, and Aapravasi Ghat. the UNESCO World Heritage immigration depot. is a 7-minute walk along the waterfront promenade.
Book a room with a harbour view at Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel if your budget stretches to $130-190/night. Rooms facing the marina are worth asking for specifically. And walk to the Caudan Arts Centre on weekends. there's almost always something local happening that won't appear in any tourist guide.
Ebene and Bagatelle: the business and lifestyle districts
Ebene Cybercity sits about 10 km south of the waterfront and was built almost entirely for corporate travellers. Courtyard by Marriott and Hennessy Park Hotel are both solid here. clean, professional, and well-connected to the M1 motorway. But once your meetings are done, you'll be ordering room service or hunting for a taxi.
Bagatelle is more interesting. It's got the Bagatelle Mall, better restaurant options along Royal Road, and The Voila Hotel right in the thick of it. Rates at Voila run $160-220/night, which is fair for what you get. It's not Caudan, but it's a proper neighbourhood at least.
Le Morne and the southwest: where the real luxury is
Le Morne Brabant is about 90 km south of Port Louis on the Southwest Peninsula, and that distance is worth it. The St. Regis Mauritius Resort sits here at $650-1,200/night, and it's genuinely in a different league. The lagoon here is calm, the reef is close, and Le Morne Mountain is one of the most photographed spots on the island.
Don't rent a car and assume you'll nip into Port Louis for dinner. The drive takes 90 minutes each way and the M1 gets heavy in the afternoon. Budget for dining on-site or in the small village of Le Morne itself. The resort's butler service can arrange excursions to Black River Gorges National Park, about 25 km northeast.
Grand Gaube and the north coast: romantic without the crowds
Grand Gaube sits on the far northern tip of Mauritius, roughly 35 km from Port Louis city centre. It's quieter than Grand Baie, less developed than Trou aux Biches, and the lagoon water is genuinely clear. Lux Grand Gaube is the reason to come here. it's one of the top-rated properties on the island at 8.9, with rooms from $185-260/night.
The drive from Port Louis takes about 45 minutes via the M2 motorway. There's no public bus that's practical for tourists this far north, so factor in taxi or rental car costs. But honestly, if you're staying at Lux, you won't need to leave much.
