Trou aux Biches Beach: What Makes It Special
The Trou aux Biches lagoon is protected by a coral reef about 1 kilometer offshore, creating exceptionally calm and clear water. The sand is white and the depth is gentle from the shore, making it ideal for non-swimmers and children. The Trou aux Biches Beachcomber maintains the best section of the beach to resort-level standards.
The public beach access is free and the stretch runs about 800 meters. Morning is the best time to swim before the afternoon wind picks up. The underwater observatory built into the reef gives a genuine look at the marine ecosystem without getting wet.
Grand Baie: The Service Hub
Grand Baie is the commercial center of the northwest coast, about 10 kilometers south of Trou aux Biches. The main street has supermarkets, money changers, pharmacies, dive operators, and the widest choice of restaurants on the coast.
Le Mauricia Hotel and Royal Palm Beachcomber both sit on Grand Baie beach. The bay is busier and the water less clear than Trou aux Biches but the surrounding infrastructure makes it a practical base for exploring the island. Day-trip operators for island-hopping, dolphin watching, and deep-sea fishing all depart from the Grand Baie boat ramp.
Pointe aux Canonniers: Historic Peninsula
Pointe aux Canonniers is a headland between Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches that was once a British fort. The cannons are still on the grounds of the Canonnier Beachcomber resort, which occupies most of the peninsula. The beach wraps around the headland giving views in two directions.
It is quieter than Grand Baie with a more intimate feel. The Canonnier is a solid romantic choice for couples who want a beach that is less busy than the main tourist areas. The Beachcomber golf course is accessible from here.
Cap Malheureux: The Quiet North
Cap Malheureux at the northern tip of the island is the quietest area on this coast. The red-roofed Notre-Dame Auxiliatrice church overlooks a small beach with the island of Coin de Mire clearly visible offshore. Coin de Mire Attitude hotel sits here, drawing a younger and more active crowd.
The snorkeling around the rocky outcrops near the headland is excellent and usually crowd-free. It is 15 minutes drive from Trou aux Biches. For windsurfing, the Cap Malheureux area gets consistent wind from the southeast trades between June and September.
Anse la Raie: Adults-Only Seclusion
Anse la Raie is a sheltered cove north of Cap Malheureux accessible by car in about 20 minutes from Trou aux Biches. Paradise Cove Boutique Hotel sits on its own narrow private beach here, surrounded by volcanic rock. It is one of the most secluded hotel settings in Mauritius.
Adults-only and with only a handful of suites, it operates at a genuinely personal level of service. The cove protects the water from wind, making it calm year-round. Not practical as a base for exploring but perfect for a holiday focused on privacy and quiet.
Where to Eat on the Northwest Coast
Le Royal at Royal Palm in Grand Baie is the finest dining experience on the coast. For mid-range, the seafood restaurants along the Grand Baie waterfront and around Trou aux Biches village serve fresh fish at $20-35 for a main. Les Copains d'Abord in Grand Baie is consistently good for Creole food.
Avoid tourist restaurants near the Grand Baie main bus stop where food quality is poor. The Saturday market at Triolet, about 10 minutes inland, has excellent street food and local produce at very low prices.
