Ger Camps: What to Know Before You Book
Ger camps range from $45 shared-bathroom budget operations to $310 luxury resorts with en-suite showers and wood-fired spa treatments. The main differentiators are bed quality (fold-out cots versus proper beds), bathroom access, and heating management at night.
At all but the most basic camps, staff refuel the wood stove during the night so you do not wake to a cold ger. At budget camps this may not happen reliably. Check explicitly. High-end camps like Khustain Luxury and Terelj Lodge use underfloor heating rather than wood stoves, which is a significant comfort upgrade.
Turtle Rock and Ariyabal Temple Area
Turtle Rock is the most recognizable landmark in Terelj, about 10 kilometers from the park entrance. The scramble takes 20 minutes to reach the top. Turtle Rock Lodge sits directly below it, giving you the walk as an early morning option from your accommodation.
The Ariyabal Buddhist Meditation Temple is a 45-minute uphill walk from the base, reached via 108 steps carved into the hillside. The temple itself is small but the views from the hilltop are worth every step. The hike back down takes 25 minutes. Best visited in early morning before tour groups arrive around 10am.
Horse Riding in Terelj
Horse riding is the quintessential Terelj activity. Most camps offer horses through local herder families at 20,000-40,000 MNT ($6-12) per hour. Half-day and full-day rides cross the open grassland and river valleys. Aryapala Ger Camp and the Hustai Ger Lodge have particularly well-organized horse programs.
The Jalman Meadows Camp organizes multi-day horseback excursions into the Khan Khentii region for serious riders. These require advance booking and a higher fitness level. For a first experience, a 2-hour guided ride from the camp is sufficient to cover meaningful terrain.
Stargazing in Terelj
Terelj is 70 kilometers from the light pollution of Ulaanbaatar and the night sky is exceptional from August through October when humidity is lowest. The Milky Way is clearly visible on cloudless nights. Jalman Meadows Camp and Khustain Luxury both run guided stargazing sessions.
The most spectacular conditions are in September and early October after the summer humidity passes. Temperatures at night drop to 5-10C in September, manageable with warm layers. Bring a small telescope or good binoculars if you have them.
Getting to Terelj from Ulaanbaatar
The paved road to Terelj leaves from the eastern side of Ulaanbaatar via the Gachuurt road. In clear traffic, the drive takes 70-90 minutes. Most organized camps either include transfer or arrange it for 80,000-120,000 MNT per car.
Public minibus options from Ulaanbaatar''s Dragon Center operate seasonally in summer but are infrequent. For independent visitors, hiring a driver through your Ulaanbaatar hotel is the simplest option at $30-50 for a round trip with waiting time. Budget 4 hours travel for Terelj and Ulaanbaatar on the same day.
Naadam Festival and Timing Your Visit
The Naadam Festival runs July 11-13 in Ulaanbaatar with the three traditional sports: wrestling, horse racing, and archery. It is spectacular and worth planning a visit around. July is also peak season for Terelj with highest camp prices and the busiest trails.
Arriving before or after the festival (late June or mid to late July) gives the best of both worlds: festival access and slightly quieter parks. September is the best month for those prioritizing the landscape and stargazing over festival atmosphere.

Ecotourism Ger Camp Khan Khentii is set up for families with large two-bed gers and organized activities for children. Horse riding, archery, and guided walks keep kids occupied. Terelj Hotel in the village is the only property with a conventional building if ger camping is a step too far for your family.
Budget
Terelj Tourist Camp from $45 in the Gachuurt Valley is the honest budget option with hot showers and included breakfast. Aryapala Ger Camp from $60 adds a better location near the Ariyabal Temple area. Both are significantly cheaper than the Turtle Rock or canyon camps.
Beach
No beaches in Terelj. The Terelj River and smaller streams have good river swimming spots in July and August when the water temperature rises to 15-18C. Khagiin Khar Lake inside the park has cold but clear water. Terelj is about grassland, granite, and sky, not water.
Foodie
The best food in Terelj is at Terelj Lodge and Spa where a private chef uses seasonal local produce. Khustain Luxury also provides quality meals. Budget camp food is filling and authentic but limited: expect mutton stew, tsuivan noodles, and airag (fermented mare's milk) as the local drink.

July and August are peak season. Grassland is green, temperatures are 20-25C during the day but drop to 5-10C at night. Naadam Festival July 11-13 in Ulaanbaatar fits perfectly with a Terelj visit. July fills the best camps months ahead. Late August is slightly quieter with excellent conditions.
Autumn (Sep-Oct)
September is increasingly the preferred month for experienced Mongolia travelers. The grassland turns golden, crowds thin dramatically, and the night sky is the clearest of the year. Nights get cold (0 to minus 5C) but well-heated gers handle it. September stargazing at Jalman Meadows is exceptional.
Spring (May)
May is the shoulder season. Cold nights and occasionally wet conditions but some of the lowest prices of the year. The grassland starts greening in late May. Some camps do not open until June 1. A good option for budget travelers who can handle variable weather.
Winter (Nov-Mar)
Winter in Terelj is for serious cold-weather travelers. Minus 20-30C temperatures require proper expedition gear. The landscape under snow is spectacular and the sky is the clearest of the year. Only the luxury camps with underfloor heating are suitable. Not suitable for casual travelers.

Summer in Terelj has cold nights. Even in July, evening temperatures drop to 8-12C and the camps heat gers from around 8pm. Bring a down layer or fleece for evenings regardless of what the daytime forecast shows. For September visits, proper warm layers are essential.

Camp-organized horse rides cost 20,000-40,000 MNT ($6-12) per hour. Negotiating directly with herder families visible near the camps can reduce this to 15,000-25,000 MNT. The quality of the ride depends more on the horse than the camp. Ask which herder the camp works with before booking.
Visit Ariyabal Temple before 10am
The Ariyabal Meditation Temple receives tour groups from Ulaanbaatar from around 10am. Arriving before 9am means you often have the 108-step climb and the hilltop views largely to yourself. The walk takes 45 minutes uphill. Morning light on the valley from the top is genuinely spectacular.

Two nights in Ulaanbaatar plus two nights in Terelj is the optimal short Mongolia visit. Ulaanbaatar has the National Museum, Gandan Monastery, and the Winter Palace of the Bogd Khan. Terelj delivers the landscape experience. Hotels in Ulaanbaatar range from $45 budget to $290 Novotel, with the Shangri-La as the benchmark luxury option.

How far is Terelj National Park from Ulaanbaatar?
About 70 kilometers via the main paved road, taking roughly 90 minutes by car in good traffic. Budget tours from Ulaanbaatar include transfer in the rate. Turtle Rock (Melkhii Khad) is a large granite formation that resembles a turtle when viewed from the main road, located about 10 kilometers into the park. The scramble up takes 20 minutes from the parking area and is accessible for most fitness levels. The view from the top looks across the entire valley. No specific trail, you simply climb the granite.
Can I visit Terelj as a day trip from Ulaanbaatar?
Yes but an overnight stay is significantly better. A day trip allows 4-5 hours in the park after the 90-minute drive each way. An overnight stay gives you the morning and evening light, the night sky, and a less rushed experience.
