Sukhbaatar Square: The City Center
Sukhbaatar Square is a massive public plaza at the geographic center of Ulaanbaatar, flanked by the Parliament building, the National Museum, and government buildings. The Kempinski Khan Palace sits directly on the square, which gives it the most recognizable central address in the country.
The Government House at the north end has a large statue of Chinggis Khan as its centerpiece. The square is free to walk and photographs are easy. The surrounding blocks have the best restaurants and the main shopping streets.
Peace Avenue: The Main Artery
Peace Avenue (Enkh Taivny Orgon Choloo) runs east-west through the city and is the main shopping, dining, and transport spine. The State Department Store at the central junction with Sukhbaatar Square is the practical landmark for orientation. The Shangri-La Centre mall complex sits on Olympic Street nearby.
Best Western Premier Tuushin on Chinggis Avenue is a short walk from the square. Corporate Hotel on Seoul Street is close to the embassy district west of the square. Most restaurants worth visiting cluster within 4-5 blocks of this central area.
Gandan Monastery: Beyond the Tourist Area
Gandan Monastery is 2 kilometers west of Sukhbaatar Square, an active Buddhist monastery with around 1,000 monks in residence. The main temple contains the enormous 26-meter Migjid Janraisig statue. Entrance is free. Morning prayers begin around 10am and are open to visitors.
The surrounding Gandan district is more residential and sees fewer tourists than the main square area. Taxis there cost 3,000-5,000 MNT from the city center. The walk back along Chinggis Avenue gives a good sense of how the city actually functions beyond the tourist core.
The Zaisan Memorial and Bogd Khan Mountain
Zaisan Hill is 6 kilometers south of the city center with a Soviet-era memorial at the top and panoramic views across the entire Ulaanbaatar valley and toward Bogd Khan Mountain. The hill is a 15-minute climb from the road. Taxis from the center cost 8,000-12,000 MNT.
Bogd Khan Mountain forms the southern edge of the city and is technically a protected area. Several hiking trails access the lower slopes. The Bogd Khan Palace Museum at the base of the mountain is worth visiting for its collection of Mongolian religious artifacts.
Staying Warm: Winter Hotel Strategy
Ulaanbaatar winters are among the most extreme of any major city. The coal-burning ger district fires that heat the periurban settlements create a visible smog layer from November through February. Stay in a hotel in the city center rather than suburban areas, the central heating is more reliable.
The Shangri-La and Novotel have the best air filtration systems and the most reliably warm rooms. The Blue Sky Tower suites have floor-to-ceiling glass that retains heat well. Budget guesthouses in the Sukhbaatar and Chingeltei districts have adequate heating but variable insulation. Bring a mask for outdoor air quality.
Eating and Drinking in Ulaanbaatar
Modern Nomads near Sukhbaatar Square is the standout for contemporary Mongolian food with dishes like Mongolian hot pot, khorkhog (mutton cooked in hot stones), and modern interpretations of traditional recipes for $15-25 per person. The Khan Brau microbrewery near the square serves decent German-style beer with food.
For the full traditional experience, Tavan Bogd restaurant on Peace Avenue serves tsuivan (fried noodles with meat), buuz (steamed dumplings), and airag (fermented mare's milk) in a traditional setting. The Narantuul Market area has cheap local food stalls but exercise caution with your belongings.
