Medina or beachfront: which should you choose?
The Medina is the soul of Essaouira. Staying inside the ramparts puts you 5 minutes from Skala de la Ville, the blue-boat harbor at Skala du Port, and the food stalls on Place Moulay Hassan. You trade convenience for noise. the narrow derbs echo, and the call to prayer from the Grand Mosque on Rue de la Skala carries far.
The beachfront on Boulevard Mohammed V is calmer, breezier, and better for families or surfers who want direct sand access. But it's a different experience. You're outside the historic core, and the 10-minute walk back through Bab Marrakech after dinner feels longer at midnight. Pick Medina if culture and food are your thing. Pick the boulevard if the Atlantic is the whole point.
Getting around Essaouira without losing your mind
The Medina is entirely on foot. No cars inside the ramparts, full stop. It's roughly 800 meters end to end, so you won't need transport to get from your riad to dinner. Taxis wait at Place Moulay Hassan and at Bab Doukkala. a ride to the bus station or north beach runs about $2-4.
For day trips to Sidi Kaouki (a beautiful surf beach 25km south) or the argan forest around Ghazoua, grand taxis from outside Bab Marrakech are your best option at roughly $15-20 for the car. Don't bother with rental cars unless you're heading to Agadir or inland. Essaouira's streets inside the Medina will eat your wing mirrors.
When to book and when to show up last minute
Gnaoua Festival in late June: book 3-4 months out, no exceptions. Easter week and Eid holidays also fill the better riads fast. 6-8 weeks minimum lead time. Outside those windows, Essaouira is surprisingly bookable last minute, especially in November through February when occupancy drops and good riads sit at $55-120/night.
One insider move: contact riads directly by WhatsApp a day or two before arrival in low season. We've seen Riad-category properties drop $30-40/night off rack rate for direct same-week bookings. They'd rather fill the room than leave it empty. Works most reliably from October through March.
The real Essaouira food scene. where to eat near your hotel
Place Moulay Hassan's restaurant terraces are fine for coffee and people-watching but overpriced for food. The grilled fish stalls at Port de Pêche (the fishing harbor, right by Skala du Port) are where you want to be for lunch. fresh catch, $4-6 a plate, plastic chairs, zero atmosphere, incredible food. It's 7 minutes walk from most Medina hotels.
For dinner, Rue Laâlouj and the streets around Riad Zahra's Medina South neighborhood have smaller local restaurants that don't cater primarily to tourists. Taros Café on Rue de la Skala does decent food and has arguably the best rooftop view in the city. Breakfast at your riad is almost always the best morning option. don't skip it.
What to actually do in Essaouira beyond the blue walls
The ramparts walk along Skala de la Ville takes about 25 minutes end to end and is free. Do it at sunset. it's legitimately one of the better Atlantic views on the Moroccan coast. The woodworking and marquetry shops along Rue des Consuls sell thuya wood pieces; it's genuinely local craft, not mass import. Budget $15-80 depending on what you're after.
Day-trip to Moulay Bouzerktoun, 10km north, for kite surfing or just to see the empty dunes. Galerie Damgaard near Bab Marrakech shows Essaouira's Gnaoua-influenced art movement and is free to browse. And honestly, a morning walk through the Mellah (the old Jewish quarter on Rue Mohammed Zerktouni) with no agenda is one of the better ways to spend 90 minutes in this city.
What first-timers always get wrong about Essaouira hotels
The photos lie. A lot of riads shoot their courtyards at a specific angle that makes a 4-room guesthouse look like a palace. Always check if the room has a window to the outside. true interior riad rooms with no natural daylight are common and not for everyone, especially in winter. Ask directly before booking.
Don't assume 'Medina location' means central. The Medina of Essaouira runs from Bab Doukkala in the north to Bab Marrakech in the south. that's about 1.2km. A riad near Bab Doukkala is not the same as one near Place Moulay Hassan. Check the pin on the map and count the walking minutes to Skala du Port before confirming.

This is the core. Rue Mohammed Al Qory, the main artery of the souks, runs through it. You're 5 minutes from Place Moulay Hassan and 8 minutes from the port's fish stalls. The lanes are narrow, the walls are blue and white, and the wind off the Atlantic tunnels through every alley.
Medina South near Bab Marrakech is slightly quieter than the center and has easier luggage access. Hotel Villa Maroc and Riad Zahra both sit in this zone and represent the best of what Essaouira does: intimate, character-rich, with rooftop terraces that actually face the ocean. Prices here run $130-200/night for the better options.
One honest caveat: street noise. The Medina doesn't go fully quiet until after midnight, and delivery carts on cobblestones at 7am are your alarm clock. Light sleepers should request interior courtyard rooms or ask specifically about room soundproofing.

You're about 12 minutes walk from Place Moulay Hassan and 10 minutes from the ramparts. not far, but enough that the street vendors and horse-drawn caleche tours aren't outside your door every morning. Local grocery shops and neighborhood cafés outnumber tourist restaurants in this zone. That's a good thing.
Prices in Medina North run $110-160/night for quality stays, which is a genuine discount on what you'd pay for equivalent quality closer to Skala de la Ville. The trade-off is a slightly longer walk with a wheeled bag over uneven cobblestones.
