Vilankulos is your entry point, whether you like it or not. The town sits on the Mozambican coast and is your jump-off for every island in the archipelago. Fly into Vilankulos Airport (VNX) and get to the Dhow Harbour on Avenida Eduardo Mondlane within the hour.
Don't book an island lodge for night one. Arrive, settle into a Vilankulos Beachfront or Town Center hotel, sort your transfers, and cross to the island the next morning with daylight on your side. We've seen too many first-timers land at dusk and miss the boat entirely.
Island vs mainland: which suits you?
Staying on Bazaruto or Benguerra Island means paying a premium, but you're waking up 5 minutes from coral reefs that most tourists only glimpse from a day-trip boat. The Western Lagoon at Anantara Bazaruto and the Benguerra North dunes at Azura are worth the jump in price for the right traveler.
If snorkeling and isolation aren't your priorities, Vilankulos Beachfront and Massinga Beach offer genuine coastal charm at half the island rate. Vilankulos Beach Lodge on the beachfront strip charges $165-230/night and the sunsets over the Bazaruto Archipelago from there are legitimately stunning.
The honest guide to Bazaruto's price tiers
Budget means Vilankulos. Bazaruto Beach Lodge and Indigo Bay's budget rooms are the only sub-$100 options we'd actually send a friend to. Both sit on Bazaruto Island and you're not sacrificing the island experience entirely, just the luxury trimmings.
Mid-range ($145-230/night) covers most of our island picks: Dugong Beach Lodge on the Eastern Coast, Marlin Lodge in Central Island, and Vilankulos Beach Lodge on the beachfront. Luxury starts at Anantara at $320/night and Benguerra Lodge at $420/night. Both are genuinely world-class and don't need defending at those prices.
When to book (and when to hold off)
July through September is dry season peak. Rates at top lodges climb 30-40% and availability at Benguerra Lodge and Anantara tightens fast. Book those months in March at the latest. The shoulder months of April-May and October-November offer near-identical weather with prices 15-25% lower.
December and January bring the rains. Some lodges close, boat crossings get rough, and visibility at Two Mile Reef drops below 10 meters. Unless you're chasing a specific low-season deal, skip those months entirely.
Getting around: boats, planes, and bad roads
There are no roads to the islands. Everything moves by boat or light aircraft. Most lodges run scheduled speedboat transfers from Vilankulos Dhow Harbour. budget 45 minutes to Bazaruto Island and 30 minutes to Benguerra. Fly-in transfers via Vilankulos Airport cost more but cut travel time to under 10 minutes.
On the mainland, the EN1 coastal road connects Vilankulos to Massinga in about 90 minutes by road. It's paved but rough in stretches. Taxis between Vilankulos town sites run 200-400 MZN. Don't rent a car unless you actually know Mozambican road conditions.
Local customs that affect your stay
Bazaruto sits inside a national park. The park entry fee is $35 per person per day and it's mandatory for all island visitors. some lodges include it, others add it to your bill. Ask before you book. Not knowing about it has ruined more than a few budgets.
Dress modestly when you're in Vilankulos town, especially around the market on Avenida Eduardo Mondlane and near the mosque. Beachwear stays on the beach. Tipping is expected at island lodges. 10-15% is the norm, and the staff at remote lodges depend on it more than you'd expect.

The Eastern Coast near Dugong Beach Lodge is quieter and rawer. Spot a dugong in the shallows here and you'll understand why this stretch is special. The Central Island section around Marlin Lodge suits families who want structured activities and calmer beach zones.
Avoid booking anything that advertises 'Bazaruto views' without specifying which coast. The western lagoon side and the eastern beach side are completely different experiences. Check your hotel's GPS coordinates before you commit.

Benguerra is 20 kilometers south of Bazaruto Island and takes about 30 minutes by speedboat from Vilankulos Dhow Harbour. It's smaller, less developed, and significantly more expensive. Azura Benguerra in the north and Benguerra Lodge in the south are the only two lodges here that made our list.

Vilankulos is where you land before you island-hop and it's worth more than a one-night layover. The Beachfront strip along the shore has solid hotels, good food, and direct sight lines to the archipelago. Casa Rex in the Town Center sits 10 minutes walk from the Dhow Harbour on Avenida Eduardo Mondlane.
