The zone is tightly managed, which means quiet streets and no tuk-tuks honking at 7am. Bagan Thande Hotel sits right on the Irrawaddy riverbank. book a river-facing room and you get sunsets that look like a painting. Aman at Summer Palace is the ultimate splurge: restored colonial buildings, private temple access at dawn, and a pool that overlooks the plain.
Nyaung-U: the practical base most visitors prefer
Nyaung-U is where locals live and where the real food scene is. Thiripyitsaya Street and the area around Nyaung-U Market have noodle shops, tea houses, and Shan food stalls that you won't find near the temple zone. Budget rooms start at $45/night here, and mid-range options like Thazin Garden Hotel sit at $140-195/night with genuinely good value.
You're 10-15 minutes by e-bike from Shwezigon Pagoda and about 20 minutes from the heart of Old Bagan. Renting an e-bike at the market for $6/day makes the whole zone your playground. Ostello Bello Bagan is the go-to for backpackers. social, clean, and well-run.
New Bagan: quieter, greener, underrated
New Bagan (Bagan Myothit) sits south of the main zone, about 4km from Old Bagan's core. It's leafy, calm, and sees fewer day-trippers than Nyaung-U. Bagan Lodge is genuinely top-tier. the highest-rated hotel on our list at 8.7. and its gardens and pool area feel like a retreat after a day on dusty temple roads.
Arthawka Hotel is the family pick here: spacious rooms, good pool, and staff who actually know the temple circuit well. You'll need an e-bike or horse cart to reach Sulamani and Dhammayangyi temples, about 15 minutes north. Don't skip the sunset at Shwesandaw Pagoda. it's the most accessible climb in the zone and the views hit different.
Sunrise and sunset: where to be and where to stay
The Bagan sunrise is the reason people come. Shwesandaw Pagoda used to be the classic climbing spot, but authorities now restrict temple climbing. check current rules before you plan around it. Balloon flights launch from near Nyaung-U Airport between November and March, and your hotel in Old Bagan means you're 10 minutes from the launch zone.
For sunset, position yourself near Pyathada Temple or book a hotel with a rooftop terrace. Aureum Palace and Hotel @Tharabar Gate both have excellent elevated vantage points. If you're staying in Nyaung-U, leave 25 minutes to get to the best sunset spots by e-bike. Don't leave it to the last minute.
