Taumadhi Square is the most photogenic and the most convenient. Durbar Square is slightly more touristed during the day but quiets down fast. Pottery Square near Dattatraya Road sits east of the main squares and is genuinely calmer, with local potters working the wheels from 6am. Golmadhi, where Newa Chen Heritage Hotel sits, is a quieter residential quarter about 8 minutes walk from Taumadhi.
Leon Tole, where Hotel Kumari Bhaktapur is located, is a mid-city lane that most guides ignore. It's 7 minutes from Durbar Square and 10 from Taumadhi, which actually makes it a decent central base. Khauma, right at the eastern edge of the old city, is the least-visited neighborhood on this list. That's either a feature or a bug depending on what you want.
Heritage hotels in Bhaktapur: worth the premium?
Short answer: yes, if you pick the right ones. Bhadgaon Guest House near Durbar Square and Newa Chen Heritage Hotel in Golmadhi are legitimately restored Newari buildings with carved wood lattice windows, brick courtyards, and rooms that feel like they belong in the 17th century. These aren't fake-heritage renovations. Staying here is part of the Bhaktapur experience.
At $260-390/night, they cost more than most Nepal hotels. But compare that to what you'd pay for equivalent heritage architecture in Europe and it's still a bargain. Book the top floor at Bhadgaon Guest House for Durbar Square views. And yes, book 6-8 weeks ahead for October travel.
Bhaktapur festivals: what to know before you book
Bisket Jatra in mid-April is the biggest one. The chariot procession fills Taumadhi Square for 9 days and it's one of the most intense street festivals in Nepal. Hotels near the square are booked out fast and prices jump 20-35%. Book Nyatapola Lodge or Bhaktapur Guest House 6 weeks out minimum if you want to be in the action.
Indra Jatra in September and Tihar in October-November also pack the old city. Tihar, the festival of lights, turns the lanes around Dattatraya Square into something genuinely magical after dark. October is peak season anyway, so prices are high regardless. Budget $115-175/night for mid-range during festival weeks and don't expect last-minute availability.
Getting around Bhaktapur: what actually works
Inside the old city, you walk. Full stop. Most of the main squares are within 10 minutes of each other on foot. Taumadhi Square to Dattatraya Square takes about 8 minutes. Durbar Square to Pottery Square is 6 minutes. There are no tuk-tuks or rickshaws navigating the narrow lanes, so comfortable shoes matter more than any transport app.
For getting into Bhaktapur from Kathmandu, the Sajha Yatayat electric bus from Ratna Park is 50-80 NPR and surprisingly reliable. Taxis from Thamel cost 800-1,200 NPR. Ask your hotel to arrange a pickup if you're arriving with bags. The Kamal Binayak entrance is closest to Taumadhi Square and Durbar Square. Don't let taxi drivers drop you at the highway.
Bhaktapur on a budget: what $45-100/night actually gets you
More than you'd expect. Bhaktapur Guest House on Taumadhi Square starts at $45/night and you're sleeping 2 minutes from one of Nepal's finest temples. Pagode Guest House near Durbar Square goes up to $85/night with better rooms and solid reviews at 8.1. Neither has a pool or a spa. Both have location that $300/night hotels in Kathmandu can't match.
The real budget trick: eat at the local bhojanalaya restaurants around Golmadhi and Sukuldhoka rather than the tourist-facing rooftop places on Taumadhi Square. A full dal bhat meal runs 200-350 NPR. Save the rooftop views for a coffee in the morning and your accommodation budget stretches noticeably further.

Taumadhi is where the 5-tiered Nyatapola Temple rises 30 meters above the square. It's the tallest pagoda in Nepal and it's basically outside your window if you stay at Nyatapola Lodge or Bhaktapur Guest House. The square empties after 7pm and that's when it gets good.
Two hotels sit here and they cover both ends of the budget: Bhaktapur Guest House at $45-70/night for travelers who just need a clean room in the right spot, and Nyatapola Lodge at $115-160/night for those who want a proper heritage feel with rooftop views over the temples. Both are solid. The location is the same.
During Bisket Jatra in April, this square becomes the center of everything. Chariot processions, fire, drums, thousands of locals. Book 6 weeks ahead if your dates overlap with the festival. The other 11 months, you can usually find rooms with 2-3 weeks' notice.

Slightly more touristy during the day, but the evenings are quiet and the architecture is extraordinary.

Bhadgaon Guest House is the luxury option here at $260-340/night, one of the finest restored Newari buildings in the city. These two sit at completely different price points but both deliver on location.
The National Art Museum is 4 minutes walk from both hotels. Peacock Window is about 6 minutes east toward Dattatraya Square. If you want to see the full old city, Durbar Square puts you in a central position to walk in either direction.
