Nagarkot is not a city. It's a ridge at 2,175m with one main road, a cluster of hotels, and arguably the best accessible Himalayan view in the Kathmandu Valley. On a clear morning you can see eight mountain ranges, including Langtang, Ganesh Himal, and on exceptional days, the Everest group to the far east.
Book a hotel on Nagarkot Ridge or at the Viewpoint area. Don't let price alone drive you down to Nagarkot Village. you'll spend your clearest morning hour hiking back up. Arrive by 4pm, get dinner, set an alarm for 5:15am. That's the whole formula.
The sunrise game: how to not blow it
The Nagarkot Viewpoint Tower is the obvious spot, and it gets crowded from October-December with Kathmandu day-trippers. If you're staying at Hotel at the End of the Universe or Club Himalaya, you can watch from your own terrace and skip the crowd entirely. That alone justifies paying a bit more for the right room.

If you're coming from Kathmandu for a weekend and want to actually decompress. not just check off the sunrise view. the luxury tier earns its price. The Panorama Hotel is at Nagarkot Summit, the highest point, and on clear mornings the view from the breakfast terrace is worth every rupee.
The Changu Narayan trek: do it on your way out
Most people leave Nagarkot by taxi back to Kathmandu. The smarter move: trek 3-4 hours downhill from the Viewpoint area along the Changu Narayan trail through terraced rice fields and small Newari villages, ending at Changu Narayan Temple, one of Nepal's oldest UNESCO-listed sites. From the temple, a short taxi or bus ride puts you in Bhaktapur Durbar Square for lunch.
The trail starts just below the Viewpoint Tower, around 2,100m, and drops to about 1,540m at Changu Narayan. It's mostly downhill, clearly marked, and takes 3-4 hours at a relaxed pace. Wear proper shoes and start by 8am to beat the midday heat in spring months.

Country Villa sits in Nagarkot Village. you'll need 15 minutes on foot to reach the main ridge viewpoints. Peaceful Cottage is in Lower Nagarkot, slightly more private, with a garden that faces east for morning light. Neither will blow you away with facilities, but both are clean and well-run.
Budget travelers should book directly with the hotels when possible. a quick phone call or WhatsApp message often gets you a $5-10 discount versus online booking platforms. Avoid the very cheap guesthouses near Nagarkot Bus Park with no online reviews. That area has no mountain views and the value proposition disappears fast.
