Paihia vs Russell: choosing your base
Paihia is the easier choice for most people. The ferry terminal, cruise departure points, supermarkets, and most restaurants are all within 10 minutes walk of each other around Marsden Road and the town centre. It's busy in summer, but that energy is part of the appeal.
Russell is the better pick if you want to actually relax. The Strand waterfront has a handful of good cafes and the Duke of Marlborough Hotel bar, and the town itself is small enough to walk in 20 minutes. The ferry crossing from Paihia takes 8 minutes and costs $16 return, so you're not cutting yourself off.
Getting around: ferries, buses, and rental cars
The Paihia to Russell passenger ferry runs roughly every 15 minutes during peak hours, operated from the Paihia Wharf on Marsden Road. It's the best 8-minute boat ride you'll take all trip. There's also a car ferry from Opua (10km south of Paihia) to Okiato if you need to cross with a vehicle, costing around $14-20 per car.
For everything else, you need wheels. The Intercity bus from Auckland drops you on Marsden Road, but once you're there, local route 80 to Kerikeri runs only a few times a day. Car hire from Paihia or Kerikeri Airport starts at around $55-85/day.
When to book: peak season realities
December and January are chaos. Kiwi families take their summer holidays, international tourists arrive, and hotels from Paihia Beach to Eagles Nest fill up weeks in advance. Expect to pay 40-60% more than shoulder season rates, and expect noise around Williams Road on Friday and Saturday nights.
The sweet spot is March to May. Temperatures sit at 18-23°C, the school holidays are over, and you'll find the same beachfront hotels at $100-180/night instead of $200-350+. Waitangi Day weekend in early February is a separate beast: book 6-8 weeks out minimum, especially near the Treaty Grounds.
The luxury end: what you're actually paying for
Eagles Nest in the Russell Hills is the closest thing New Zealand has to a world-class private villa retreat. At $350-900/night, you get panoramic Tai Tokerau Harbour views, a private pool in most villas, and staff who actually know what concierge service means. It's not cheap. It's also not overpriced for what it delivers.
Kauri Cliffs at Matauri Bay is the other serious option, with a Pete Dye-designed clifftop golf course and rates from $280-650/night. Non-golfers love it just as much: the coastal walks above the Cavalli Islands are extraordinary. Both hotels are genuinely in a different category to anything else in the region.
Family stays: what actually works
Bay of Islands Holiday Park near Haruru Falls is the most practical family option, with cabin-style accommodation from $60-95/night and direct access to the Haruru Falls Heritage Trail. It's 7km from Paihia town centre, so you'll need a car, but the space and facilities are worth it with kids in tow.
Copthorne Hotel and Resort in Waitangi is the other solid family pick. It sits on the water at Waitangi, 1.5km from Paihia, with a pool, large grounds, and immediate access to the Treaty Grounds. Book a garden-view room to avoid paying a premium for a view the kids won't care about.
Avoiding the common booking mistakes
Don't book a 'sea view' room anywhere on upper Williams Road without seeing verified photos first. Half of those views are a sliver of water between rooftops. And don't assume 'Paihia' means 'on the beach': several hotels use the Paihia address but sit 1-2km inland near the SH11 intersection.
Kerikeri is a genuinely nice town with good food and the Stone Store on Kerikeri Road, but staying there if your focus is the water means a 25-minute drive every time you want the beach. Stay in Kerikeri for a slow, wine-and-food trip. Stay in Paihia or Russell if you're here for the bay.

Paihia is where Bay of Islands begins for most visitors. The town centre sits along Marsden Road, with the wharf at one end and a string of restaurants, tour operators, and dive shops running north. It's walkable, lively in summer, and genuinely convenient.
Waitangi sits 1.5km north of Paihia along the estuary. It's quieter and dominated by the Treaty Grounds, which are worth at least 2 hours of your time. The Copthorne Resort sits right on the water here, which is one of the better resort locations in the region.
Avoid booking anything on upper Williams Road that claims sea views without checking verified photos. The beachfront stretch near the wharf on Marsden Road is where you want to be.

Russell was New Zealand's first capital and it feels like it. The Strand along the waterfront is lined with heritage buildings, and Pompallier Mission is a short walk from where the ferry docks. It's 8 minutes from Paihia by passenger ferry, which keeps it connected without being overrun.
The Russell Hills above town are where Eagles Nest sits, at $350-900/night with views that justify every cent. The approach along the narrow ridge road is worth experiencing even if you're not staying. This is one of the few places in New Zealand where 'luxury' genuinely means something.
Russell itself is small: you can walk the entire waterfront in 20 minutes. The Duke of Marlborough Hotel bar on The Strand is the place for a drink at sunset. Book ahead for dining in summer as the few good restaurants fill up fast.

Opua sits 7km south of Paihia on the western shore of the bay. It's the home of the Bay of Islands marina and the car ferry crossing to Okiato. The Opua Forest Reserve begins practically at the door of Opua Forest Lodge, which is one of the better romantic stays in the region.
Haruru Falls is 4km west of Paihia along the Waitangi River estuary. The falls themselves are impressive, and the Heritage Trail walking loop around the mangroves is one of the best free activities in the area. Bay of Islands Holiday Park sits right at the trailhead.
Both areas are quieter than Paihia but you'll need a car. Opua to Paihia is a 10-minute drive; Haruru to Paihia is 8 minutes. Neither is inconvenient, especially if you have kids or just want to escape the summer crowds on Williams Road.
