Big Corn vs Little Corn: which island is right for you?
Big Corn has infrastructure. There's a real town at Brig Bay, a functioning airstrip with daily flights from Managua, and a main road that loops the island. You can rent a bike for $10/day, grab a taxi from the dock to Southwest Bay for about $3, and find an ATM before noon.
Little Corn is the opposite. No roads, no cars, no ATMs. You walk everywhere. Village Center to East Beach takes about 12 minutes on a sandy path through palm trees. It's the better island if total disconnection is the point. But go in with enough cash and don't bank on making a tight onward flight connection from Big Corn.
How to get to the Corn Islands without losing a day
La Costeña flies from Managua's Augusto C. Sandino Airport to Big Corn daily. The flight is about 1.5 hours and tickets run $120-180 each way when booked ahead. Book early. it's a small turboprop and it fills up. If you're taking the bus-and-boat route from Managua through El Rama and Bluefields, budget 2 full days each direction.
Once on Big Corn, the panga to Little Corn departs from Brig Bay dock at around 9 AM and 4 PM daily, though times shift with weather. The $5-7 crossing takes 45 minutes in calm seas. During December through February, swells off the east side can make it genuinely rough. Waterproof your bag, sit toward the middle, and you'll be fine.
The best neighborhoods to stay in on Big Corn Island
Southwest Bay is where you want to be for beach access and the best snorkeling off Big Corn. Paraiso Club Hotel sits right here and it's legitimately romantic. The area is quiet compared to Brig Bay, which gets noisy near the port and has a scrappier vibe that's fine for a night but not what most people come for.
South End is the second-best base. Hotel Los Delfines here sits above a rocky coastline with good sunset views, about 20 minutes by bike from Picnic Center Beach. Long Bay, between South End and Waula Point, is quieter still and worth considering if you want a beach practically to yourself. Avoid the area directly behind Brig Bay port. it's congested and the closest beach is a hike.
Little Corn Island: where to stay and what to expect
Little Corn has three rough zones: the Village Center on the west side where the panga docks, the North End which is rocky and wild, and East Beach which is the obvious star. Most accommodation is strung along walking paths between these areas. Derek's Place sits right in Village Center, about 8 minutes on foot from East Beach. Little Corn Beach and Bungalow is on East Beach itself, which cuts out that walk entirely.
Elsa's Place up at North End is more secluded, about 15 minutes walk from Village Center. It's worth it for the quiet and the cliff views, but you'll want to pack a flashlight for the path at night. Casa Iguana on the East Side is the budget standout on the island. sparse, beautiful, and honestly one of the better deals in the entire Caribbean at $45-75/night.
Diving and snorkeling: what's actually worth doing
The Corn Islands sit on the edge of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest in the world. Big Corn's best dive sites are on its southern and western sides, where the wall drops off fast. Nautilus Dive Center near Southwest Bay runs two-tank dives for around $60-75 and has good equipment. Visibility averages 20-30 meters in dry season.
Little Corn's coral garden off East Beach is accessible for snorkelers without a guide. just swim out about 100 meters from shore. The reef here is shallower and in notably better condition than most of Big Corn's accessible snorkel spots. If you want to dive Little Corn, there are a couple of small operators in Village Center, but book ahead since they're one-person operations.
The honest truth about rainy season on the Corn Islands
June through November is wet season, with September and October being the most intense. It doesn't rain all day. usually a couple of hard afternoon downpours. but boat service to Little Corn gets cancelled more often during this stretch. Budget travelers benefit most from this window, with prices 20-30% below peak. Just don't plan anything time-sensitive.
The real sweet spot most travelers miss is late November through early December. Dry season has started, the worst of the storms have passed, and Christmas crowds haven't arrived yet. Hotel prices are still at shoulder-season rates around $100-160/night for mid-range options on Big Corn. The sea is calmer and the visibility for diving is improving fast. This two-week window is genuinely underused.

Waula Point sits on the north side of the island and most visitors genuinely don't make it up here. Sunshine Hotel Corn Island is the reward for those who do. It's about 20 minutes by bike from Brig Bay, quieter than Southwest Bay, and has a stretch of reef-fronted shore that's solid for snorkeling.
The Brig Bay area has improved but it's still rough around the edges. The streets behind the dock get sketchy after dark, and the closest beach is a 10-minute walk west. It's a fine one-night base before heading to Little Corn, not a destination in itself.

This stretch of coast is the best on Big Corn for families with kids because the water is shallower and calmer than the exposed eastern shore. It's about 10 minutes by taxi from Brig Bay dock.
