Brosundet Hotel on the canal is the obvious pick and it earns the hype. The building is a converted warehouse right on the water at Apotekergata, and the rooms facing the canal are exactly as good as the photos suggest. Book a canal-view room, not a street-facing one. it's the same price category but completely different experience.
If you want to go further, Hotel Union Øye in Norangsfjord is a 2-hour drive from Ålesund but operates on a different level entirely. Kaiser Wilhelm II slept here. The fjord setting outside Øye village is one of the most dramatic in western Norway. At $340-520/night it's not cheap, but it's a two-night destination, not just a place to sleep.

Nørvøya is the main island and where most of Ålesund's life happens. Kongens Gate runs through the heart of it with the best Art Nouveau facades in Norway on both sides. You're 5 minutes from Brosundet Canal, 10 minutes from the Skansen fish market, and 15 minutes from the base of Aksla hill.
