City Centre: where to base yourself
Storgata and Sjøgata are the backbones of Bodø's city centre, and most of your best hotel options sit within a few blocks of both. You're 10 minutes walk from the ferry terminal and 5 minutes from Bodø Cathedral. It's compact, practical, and easy to navigate even in winter darkness.
The insider move is to book something on or just off Sjøgata for easy access to the Lofoten ferry without a taxi. Comfort Hotel Bodø and Radisson Blu are both here and routinely sell out during midnight sun weekends in late June. Don't leave it to the last week. prices jump fast.
Saltstraumen: the dramatic alternative
Saltstraumen sits 33 km southeast of Bodø city centre, and it's home to one of the world's strongest tidal currents. Hotels here, like Storfjord Hotel, are genuinely remote: surrounded by water and mountains with almost no neighbours. It's spectacular, but you need a car or a taxi to get anywhere.
The tidal current peaks four times daily and the exact times shift every day, so ask your hotel the evening before when to be at the bridge. Most guests miss the best window because they don't ask. It's a small thing that makes a big difference.
Northern Lights: what no one tells you
Bodø sits inside the aurora zone, but city light pollution on Storgata and around the bus terminal washes out weaker displays. The real move is to walk 20 minutes north to Bodøsjøen lake or drive 3 km up Rønvikfjellet for dark skies. Hotels closer to the city edge have a genuine advantage here.
We've seen dozens of travellers book inner city rooms expecting to see auroras from the window and go home disappointed. Clear skies and a dark spot matter far more than the hotel's aurora marketing. Check the UiT aurora forecast app the evening before and be ready to move.
The Harbour area: views vs. value
The Harbour strip along Kongens gate is Bodø's most scenic area, and Thon Hotel Nordlys sits right on it. You pay a premium of roughly $30-50/night over comparable City Centre options, and in return you get unobstructed fjord views and a front-row seat to the midnight sun reflecting off the water.
The trade-off is a slightly longer walk to the train station, about 12 minutes, and fewer dining options right outside the door. Tollbugata has the better restaurant cluster and it's a 6-minute walk from the Harbour hotels. Worth knowing before you decide the Harbour is strictly superior.
Getting to Fauske and Mo i Rana from Bodø
Two of our vetted hotels sit outside Bodø itself: Fauske Hotel in Fauske (60 km east on the E6) and Meyergården Hotel in Mo i Rana (about 220 km south). Both are solid options if you're driving the Helgeland coastal route or continuing into Nordland county.
Fauske is also a key rail junction. if you're arriving on the Nordlandsbanen train from Trondheim, you pass through here before reaching Bodø. Meyergården is worth a night in its own right: Mo i Rana has the Svartisen glacier nearby and the town centre is more interesting than it looks on paper.
Business travel in Bodø: what actually works
Bodø is a surprisingly active business hub for northern Norway, with the Norwegian Air Force base and several government offices pulling in weekday visitors. Quality Hotel Diplomat Bodø on City Centre is the main business pick, with meeting rooms and easy access to the airport, roughly 8 minutes by taxi from Storgata.
Book mid-week rooms at least 3 weeks ahead during Norwegian public sector conference season, which clusters in February and October. Rates at the Diplomat push toward $185/night during those windows. The Radisson Blu is a solid fallback and consistently holds inventory a little later.

City Centre is built around Storgata and Sjøgata, two parallel streets that run east-west through the heart of Bodø. Five of our 10 vetted hotels sit here, from the budget-friendly Bodø Hostel to the top-rated Britannia. The Norwegian Aviation Museum is a 12-minute walk north, and Bodø Cathedral is practically on your doorstep.
Prices in City Centre range from $45/night at the hostel end to $420/night at Britannia, so the range is genuinely wide. You're never more than 10 minutes walk from the ferry terminal on Sjøgata, which matters if you're catching the early Lofoten departure. Most restaurants, including the good ones on Tollbugata, are within a 5-minute radius.
Avoid the blocks east of Hålogalandsgata toward the industrial port: there's no tourist infrastructure there and the atmosphere is flat. Stick to the western grid between Sjøgata and Storgata and you'll have everything you need.

Bodø's Harbour area runs along Kongens gate with open water on one side and the compact city grid on the other. Skagen Hotel and Thon Hotel Nordlys are both here, with Thon sitting right on the waterfront. The midnight sun reflecting off the fjord from this strip is genuinely one of the best free shows in Norway.
You're about 12 minutes walk from Bodø train station and 8 minutes from the main Storgata restaurant and shopping strip. It's not inconvenient, just slightly less central than City Centre. The upside is that the immediate area feels calmer, especially outside peak summer.
Price premium over City Centre is roughly $20-50/night depending on the hotel and season. That's a reasonable trade for the views in June and July. In winter, when it's dark by 2pm, the harbour premium is harder to justify.

Saltstraumen is 33 km southeast of Bodø, built around the maelstrom where the tidal current hits 40 km/h. It's one of the strongest in the world, and Storfjord Hotel sits right in that landscape at $260-360/night. This is not a practical base. It's a destination in itself.
You need a car or a taxi to stay here. Bus route 100 from Bodø Bus Terminal on Sjøgata does connect, but it runs infrequently. If you're going carless, budget 350-500 NOK each way for the taxi ride and plan your tidal viewing around the schedule your hotel provides.
The payoff is total quiet, extraordinary scenery, and a 9.0 guest rating that's genuinely earned. Come for 1-2 nights as part of a longer Bodø trip. Don't base your whole visit here unless you're specifically here for fishing, kayaking, or serious nature photography.
