Sur walking tour: dhows, lighthouses, and the old quarter
Start at the dhow boatyard on the corniche (western end of town). Watch craftsmen assembling wooden boats using techniques unchanged for centuries. No entry fee, just walk up and observe. Morning hours (7-10am) are busiest with work activity.
Cross the Al Ayjah bridge to the lighthouse and watchtower district. The watchtowers along the coast date from the Portuguese colonial era. The lighthouse itself gives Indian Ocean views. The Al Ayjah neighborhood has old merchant houses and a quieter atmosphere than the main town.
Return via the fish market on the harbor (best at 6-7am, closed by noon). Walk the corniche for sunset when the dhow boatyard is silhouetted against the sky. The Sur Maritime Museum near the corniche covers the city's Indian Ocean trading history (1 OMR, 30 minutes).
Ras al Jinz turtle experience: how to do it right
The Ras al Jinz Scientific Center is 45 minutes east of Sur on a paved road. Night tours depart at 9pm and last 1-2 hours depending on turtle activity. Cost: 7 OMR per person. Book through the center's website or call ahead, especially October through March.
Green sea turtles come ashore after dark, dig nests, and lay 80-120 eggs per clutch. You watch from 5 meters away with a guide. Photography is restricted (no flash, red-light torches only). The experience is genuinely moving. Between May and October, up to 100 turtles nest per night.
Morning tours (4am departure) from June through October let you see hatchlings emerging and making their first dash to the sea. Both tours are worth doing. If you stay at the Ras al Jinz center, you can do the night tour and the morning tour in one visit.
Wadi Shab: the essential day hike
Wadi Shab is 1 hour west of Sur (80 km on the coastal highway). Park at the lot by the highway and take the boat across the wadi mouth (0.5 OMR per person). The hike follows the wadi upstream for 3 km over rocky terrain.
After 45 minutes, you reach the swimming pools. Turquoise water in a narrow canyon with date palms overhead. The final section requires swimming 200 meters through narrow gorges to reach a hidden waterfall cave. Bring water shoes, a dry bag, and swimwear under your hiking clothes.
Start by 8am to beat the heat (the canyon gets direct sun by 11am) and the tour groups that arrive by 10am. Bring 2 liters of water and snacks. There are no facilities at the wadi. The entire experience takes 4-5 hours including the hike back. Definitely the highlight of the Sur area.
Road trip: Muscat to Sur via the wadis
The 300 km coastal drive from Muscat to Sur is one of Oman's best road trips. Take Highway 17 south along the coast. The road is excellent and well-signed. Allow a full day with stops.
Stop 1: Bimmah Sinkhole (1 hour from Muscat). A collapsed limestone cave with turquoise water. Free entry, 15-minute stop. Best on weekdays when it is empty. Stop 2: Wadi Tiwi (30 minutes further). Drive 7 km up the wadi valley past villages and date palms. The road is paved but narrow. No hiking required, just drive and stop at the pools.
Stop 3: Wadi Shab (15 minutes from Wadi Tiwi). The big hike. Allow 4-5 hours. Arrive in Sur by late afternoon for sunset on the corniche. The next day, do the town and the turtle tour. This two-day itinerary is the best way to experience eastern Oman.
Fins Beach and Tiwi: alternatives to the wadis
Fins Beach (Ras al Hadd area) is a wild stretch of white sand with dramatic cliffs. No facilities, no people, no entrance fee. Park off the highway and walk down. Swimming is possible but the waves can be strong. Best visited on the way between Sur and Ras al Jinz.
Tiwi village sits at the mouth of Wadi Tiwi. A few homestays and a beach that feels completely private on weekdays. The drive up Wadi Tiwi (7 km paved road) passes through traditional villages with date plantations and falaj irrigation channels. No hiking needed.
For a splurge, the Alila Jabal Akhdar resort (2 hours from Sur, in the mountains) is one of the Middle East's most dramatic hotels at 80-150 OMR/night. It is not near Sur but makes a logical next stop if you are heading back to Muscat via the interior route.
Practical tips: driving, fuel, and desert etiquette
Rental cars from Muscat cost 10-15 OMR/day ($26-39) for a basic sedan. A sedan handles all paved roads including Sur, Wadi Shab, and Ras al Jinz. Only Wadi Tiwi's upper section and some desert tracks require 4WD. Fuel is cheap at 0.20 OMR/liter ($0.52). Fill up in Sur since stations are sparse beyond town.
Drive carefully at dawn and dusk on the highway between Sur and Ras al Jinz. Camels cross the road and are nearly invisible until your headlights hit them. Use high beams. Speed limits are enforced by radar cameras (120 km/h on highways, fines are steep).
Dress modestly in Sur and surrounding villages. Cover shoulders and knees as a sign of respect. Omani people are among the most hospitable you will meet. If offered coffee or dates, accept. If you want to photograph someone, ask first. Tipping is not expected but appreciated (0.5-1 OMR for restaurant service).

Spring (April-May)
Getting hot. April is still manageable for morning hikes but May hits 35°C+ by midday. Turtle activity begins increasing. Prices are moderate. Start hikes by 6am and spend afternoons in air conditioning or swimming at Wadi Shab.
Summer (June-September)
Brutally hot but the best turtle season. Up to 100 green sea turtles nest nightly at Ras al Jinz. Hatchlings emerge June through October. Khareef (monsoon) season brings misty conditions to parts of Oman. Hiking is dangerous in the heat. Come only for turtles and do everything at night or dawn.
Late Autumn (November-December)
