Rates at Jais Aben run $145-210/night including transfers. That's a genuine bargain for a private island resort with house reef access. WWII wreck sites are a short boat ride away, and the resort team knows these waters better than any mainland dive operator in Madang.

The practical reality: you need transport. There's no reliable PMV connection from Alexishafen into Madang town, and the 20 km stretch of road can be slow going in wet season. Car hire from Madang Airport costs roughly $80-100/day, and it's worth it if you're staying up here for more than 2 nights.
Birdwatchers get serious value from this base. The forest behind the Mission area has species that you won't find in Madang town, and the area rarely has other tourists competing for the same trails. It's a niche pick, but the right niche.

Beach

Foodie
The Transgarden area, particularly around Smugglers Inn, has the most interesting dining concentration outside of Town Centre. Local fish dishes and expat-run kitchens within a 10-minute radius.

PMVs thin out fast after 6pm and can disappear entirely by 7:30pm. Taxis cost 20-40 PGK for cross-town trips and are worth every toea after dark.
Dry season on Kranket Island books out surprisingly fast
Jais Aben Resort only has a limited number of bungalows and the dive community knows it well. June-August availability regularly fills 10-12 weeks ahead, not 4-6 like most Madang properties. If you're planning a diving trip for July, start looking in April. Waiting until 3 weeks out almost guarantees you'll end up on the mainland instead.
The Madang Show changes everything for one week in June
The Madang Show (typically the last week of June) is one of PNG's most colourful regional singsings. Every hotel in Madang fills up. Rates on Coronation Drive jump $30-50/night above normal and the Lagoon Waterfront properties can be completely sold out. Either book 3 months ahead if you want to attend, or shift your trip a week earlier to avoid the price spike entirely.
