Miraflores or Barranco: Which base is right for you?
Miraflores is the safe default. The Malecón cliffs are stunning, Parque Kennedy is walkable, and you've got Lima's best restaurants within a 10-minute radius. Prices reflect it: expect $105-185/night for a decent mid-range room on Avenida José Larco or nearby streets.
Barranco is for travelers who want texture. The murals on Bajada de Baños, the bars on Avenida Grau, the colonial houses turned into boutique stays. it's a different Lima entirely. You'll pay $45-130/night, sleep better, and have better stories. Just plan to take a 15-minute taxi into Miraflores for dinner at the big-name restaurants.
Lima's garúa season: what it means for your trip
Lima sits in a coastal desert, and from June through October a thick marine fog called garúa blankets the city. Temperatures hover at 14-17°C. The sky is flat grey for days at a time. Sounds grim, but it's also when hotel prices drop 25-35% and the city belongs more to locals than tourists.
If blue skies matter to you, go January through March. Summer in Lima means 26-28°C, the Malecón is buzzing, and rooftop bars on Avenida del Ejército fill up every night. Just know you'll pay peak rates at every hotel on our list.
Getting from Jorge Chávez Airport to your hotel
The airport is in Callao, a solid 45-60 minutes from Miraflores on a good traffic day. On a Friday evening that can stretch to 90 minutes on the Vía Expresa. Use InDriver or Beat from the arrivals hall. both apps work at the airport and the fare to Miraflores runs $12-18.
Avoid the unofficial taxi touts inside the terminal. We've seen this mistake hundreds of times. They'll charge $30-40 for the same ride and take longer routes. If you land after midnight, strongly consider booking one night at the Wyndham Costa del Sol in Callao and heading to Miraflores fresh in the morning.
Eating in Lima: what your hotel location means for dinner
Lima is a serious food city. Staying in Miraflores puts you close to Central on Avenida Pedro de Osma, Maido on Calle San Martín, and Kjolle on Avenida Pedro de Osma. Book those 3 months ahead, not 3 days. The walk-in scene is better along Calle Berlin and Calle Berlín's side streets.
From Barranco, you're 5 minutes from La 73 and Isolina, two of the city's best neighbourhood restaurants. Mercado de Surquillo is a $5 taxi ride and the best $4 ceviche in Lima is served there before noon. Don't sleep on the Barranco food scene just because the big names are in Miraflores.
Lima's luxury hotels: are they worth it?
Two hotels sit clearly above everything else on our list. The Belmond Miraflores Park on Malecón de la Reserva is rated 9.4 and charges $320-550/night for a reason. The Pacific Ocean views from the upper floors are legitimately one of the best hotel experiences in South America. It's not a stretch to say it competes with the best city hotels on the continent.
Inkaterra La Casona on Avenida La Mar is the more intimate option at $280-420/night. It's a restored Republican mansion with 11 suites and a design that doesn't feel like a chain hotel. If you're spending this kind of money, skip the big-brand options and pick one of these two. You won't regret it.
Neighborhoods to skip and why
Centro Histórico has the best colonial architecture in Lima. The Plaza Mayor and Las Nazarenas church are genuinely stunning. But staying here is a bad call. The area shuts down after 7pm, street crime spikes at night, and you'll be in a taxi for every dinner and drink. Save it for a day trip.
Miraflores itself has a trap zone: the blocks immediately around Larcomar Shopping Center get overpriced and tourist-heavy. You're 10 minutes walk from Huaca Pucllana, a pre-Incan pyramid sitting in the middle of the district. That kind of proximity to history, food, and ocean views is why most of our top hotels are here. Prices run $65-550/night depending on how serious you want to get.
Don't stay too close to Larcomar if you want to avoid tourist-trap pricing and crowds. The blocks between Parque Kennedy and Avenida Petit Thouars give you better access to local bakeries, the Surquillo market, and streets that feel like actual Lima.

The Metropolitano bus stops near Avenida Pedro de Osma and gets you to Miraflores in 12 minutes. So you don't have to choose between Barranco's vibe and Miraflores' restaurants. Base yourself here, eat there.

Callao is not a destination. It's a functional neighbourhood surrounding Jorge Chávez International Airport and the port. The only reason to stay here is a very early flight, a very late arrival, or a one-night layover with no interest in crossing the city.
The Wyndham Costa del Sol is the standout here. It's literally inside the airport perimeter, which means you can check in at midnight and be through security by 5am without a single taxi involved. Rooms run $110-160/night and the business facilities are solid.
If you have more than one full day in Lima, don't stay in Callao. You'll waste half your trip in taxis. But for transit stays, it's the only logical call.

The historic centre of Lima around Plaza Mayor and Jirón de la Unión is worth a half-day visit. The Cathedral, the Palacio de Gobierno, and the monastery of San Francisco with its catacombs are all legitimately impressive. Come for lunch, stay for the architecture tour.
But we list zero hotels here for a reason. The neighbourhood shuts down hard after 7pm. Everything within a 10-minute walk of Plaza Mayor becomes unsafe at night, and the few hotels that operate in the area charge Miraflores prices for a location that requires a taxi to every dinner.
Take the Metropolitano from Miraflores. it runs to Avenida Emancipación in the centre in around 25 minutes for under $1. See it, tick it off, go back to a hotel that doesn't require you to lock yourself inside by 8pm.
