Puerto Princesa: More than a stopover
Most travelers treat Puerto Princesa as a transit point and that's a real mistake. The City Center around Rizal Avenue and Malvar Street has solid mid-range hotels within 5 minutes walk of good restaurants, and the Palawan Museum on Mendoza Park is worth 2 hours of anyone's time.
The big draw is the UNESCO-listed Underground River at Sabang, 80 kilometers northwest of the city. Day trips from Downtown run about ₱1,500-2,500 all-in and leave from San Jose Terminal before 8am. Book your Underground River permit online before you arrive. walk-in slots sell out by 7am during peak season and you will be turned away.
El Nido: Pick your base carefully
El Nido Town is small but it matters where you sleep. The main strip along Calle Hama is noisy until midnight and the bars near Corong-Corong Beach don't close early. If you need sleep before a 6am island-hopping tour, book something a block back from the waterfront or consider the quieter Lio Tourism Estate zone 4 kilometers north.
Island-hopping tours A, B, C, and D depart from the town pier near the market. Tour A covers Big and Small Lagoon and is the one to do first. Prices run ₱1,200-1,800 per person including lunch. Nacpan Beach is 45 minutes north by habal-habal and worth a half-day trip even if you're island-hopped out.
Coron: Divers first, everyone else second
Coron is built around diving, specifically the Japanese WWII shipwrecks scattered across Coron Bay. The Okikawa Maru and Irako wrecks sit 20-40 meters down and draw serious divers from January through May when visibility hits 20-30 meters. Coron Town Proper on Busuanga Island is the base for everything.
Non-divers aren't left out. Kayangan Lake is 30 minutes by boat from the town pier and the turquoise water at the overlook viewpoint is one of the most photographed spots in the Philippines. Twin Lagoon is another 15 minutes further and often less crowded before 9am. Rent a pump boat from the town pier for ₱1,500-2,000 and go early.
San Vicente: Palawan's least-crowded coast
Long Beach in San Vicente is 14 kilometers of sand with almost no infrastructure compared to El Nido. Club Palagui is currently the best resort on the strip, and the local government has deliberately kept development slow. San Vicente is 3 hours north of Puerto Princesa by shared van from San Jose Terminal, and the airstrip now has direct flights from Manila.
This is where you come to actually relax. No island-hopping touts, no bar strip, no crowds. Port Barton is 30 minutes south of San Vicente Town and has a backpacker scene with guesthouses under $30. it's a different vibe but equally mellow. The snorkeling off Exotic Island near Port Barton is better than anything accessible from El Nido Town beach.
When to go and what it'll cost you
Dry season runs November-May. December through February is peak tourist season and prices in El Nido and Coron jump 30-50% above base rates. March and April are warm, dry, and slightly less crowded than the Christmas period. May is the last safe month for boat-based activities before the southwest monsoon rolls in around June.
The rainy season (June-October) cuts hotel prices sharply. Budget rooms in Puerto Princesa drop to $35-50/night and even mid-range El Nido hotels discount by 25-40%. The catch: inter-island boats cancel 3-4 days a week, and island-hopping tours pause entirely when waves are above 1.5 meters. If you're flexible and can handle some down days, late October is genuinely good value.
Avoid these common Palawan hotel mistakes
Don't book a 'Puerto Princesa beachfront' hotel without verifying which beach. Several resorts around Honda Bay market themselves as city properties but sit 20-25 minutes north of Downtown on National Highway. You'll spend ₱200-300 per tricycle ride every time you want dinner on Rizal Avenue. Check the map pin before you confirm.
Skip the cheapest guesthouses on El Nido's main strip if you plan early morning tours. Walls are thin, the karaoke bars on Calle Hama run until 1am, and a 5:30am wake-up after 3 hours of sleep ruins island-hopping fast. Spend an extra $20-30 and get a room a street back from the waterfront. It's worth it every single time.

Puerto Princesa is the capital and the main entry point. Most flights from Manila and Cebu land here, and the city has matured past pure transit hub. The City Center around Rizal Avenue and Malvar Street has restaurants, local markets, and enough nightlife to keep you busy for 2-3 nights.
Staying Downtown cuts tricycle costs significantly. The San Jose Terminal. where vans to El Nido and Sabang depart. is 10 minutes from the City Center. Hotels here run $45-160/night depending on category, and you get better value per peso than El Nido for equivalent comfort.
The Underground River at Sabang is the main day trip and it's world-class. Honda Bay island-hopping is 20 minutes north of Downtown and underrated. The best hotels are in El Nido Town proper or on the archipelago islands themselves. Sabang is a small barangay 80 kilometers northwest of Puerto Princesa and the base for the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River, one of only a handful of UNESCO Natural World Heritage sites in Southeast Asia. The national park entrance is a 10-minute walk from Sabang Beach's main pier.
Daluyon Beach and Mountain Resort is the standout property here, rated 8.8 and running $145-210/night. It sits directly on Sabang Beach with the national park forest behind it.
