Surfing Siargao: What You Need to Know
Cloud 9 is the headline but not the whole story. The reef breaks at Jacking Horse, Stimpy's, and Tuason Point are within 10km of General Luna and offer different levels of difficulty. Cloud 9 is for advanced surfers only. The hollow rights at Cloud 9 break over a shallow coral reef and have sent plenty of people to the hospital.
Board rentals cost PHP 200 to 400/day on Tourism Road. Surf lessons for beginners are at Jacking Horse beach (easier sandy-bottom break). Book 2 lessons before going to Cloud 9. The best surf is at 6am before the easterly trade winds pick up.
Island Hopping from General Luna
The three-island tour is the main event: Naked Island (a sandbar), Guyam (jungle and snorkeling), and Daku (longest beach, picnic lunch included). Depart from General Luna pier at 8am. Tours cost PHP 600 to 800 per person. Book the day before through your hotel or any Tourism Road tour desk.
Sohoton Cove is the premium experience. The stingless jellyfish lake and cove scenery are extraordinary but the permit system limits daily visitors. Book 2 to 3 days ahead through Siargao Tourism Office. The tour costs PHP 1,500 per person including boat, guide, and fees. Worth every peso.
General Luna: Where to Eat and Drink
Tourism Road is the main spine of General Luna's dining scene. Kermit Siargao has the best reputation for pizza and pasta. Bravo handles Filipino classics. For breakfast, Harana Surf Resort's beach cafe is the best spot for fresh fruit bowls and coffee with a sea view at PHP 200 to 400.
The bar scene centers on Tourism Road and the beachfront strip. Bars open at 10pm and run until 3am on weekends. Punta Bar near the pier is the most established venue. Avoid drinking on isolated beaches at night and keep valuables in your accommodation safe.
Getting Around Siargao
Motorbike rental is the standard. PHP 400/day from most guesthouses or roadside shops on Tourism Road. The island is 102km long but most destinations are within 20km of General Luna. Habal-habal motorcycle taxis cover short trips for PHP 50 to 100. Multicabs (shared jeepney-trucks) run between General Luna and Dapa for PHP 30.
For Sohoton Cove and Pacifico, arrange through tour operators. The northern coast road is improving but sections remain unpaved after heavy rain. During typhoon season (July to November), check road conditions before motorbike trips to remote areas.
Magpupungko Rock Pools
Magpupungko is on the east coast, 45 minutes by motorbike from General Luna. The tidal rock pools appear at low tide, revealing clear natural pools among dramatic rock formations. Check the tide table before going. The pools are best at -0.2m tide or lower, which occurs mid-morning on most days.
Entry is PHP 50. The site has basic food stalls selling coconuts and grilled fish. Arrive by 9am to beat the tour groups. The drive through rice paddies and coconut groves along the east coast road is one of the better scenic rides on the island.
Sugba Lagoon: The Hidden Lagoon
Sugba Lagoon is a saltwater lagoon in Del Carmen municipality, 1.5 hours by boat from General Luna. The emerald water and surrounding mangroves make it photogenic. Entry fee is PHP 250. Tours depart General Luna at 7am and include 2 to 3 hours at the lagoon.
The lagoon has a floating platform for swimming and a slide. Book through any General Luna tour operator for PHP 1,200 to 1,500 per person including boat and fees. Combine with Del Carmen mangrove tour on the same day for the full Del Carmen experience.

The Cloud 9 area is 3km north of General Luna center. The surf break is the main reason to stay here. A few small guesthouses and resorts sit along the road to the boardwalk.
Quieter than General Luna, with fewer restaurants. You will need a motorbike to access the main dining scene. Guesthouses from PHP 1,500/night, resorts from PHP 5,000.

Pacifico is 80km north of General Luna on a partly rough road. The beach here is mostly empty even in peak season. A handful of surf camps and small guesthouses serve the dedicated surfers and off-gridders who make the journey.
Expect basic conditions. The surf here is less consistent than Cloud 9 but when it breaks, the crowds are zero. Basic guesthouses from PHP 800/night.

Del Carmen is the second-largest municipality, north of General Luna. The airport is here. Most tourists pass through but do not stay. The Sohoton Cove and Sugba Lagoon access points are in this municipality.
A few guesthouses near the airport serve early-morning flight departures. Otherwise, base in General Luna and day-trip here.
