Torun's Gothic Old Town Walk
Start at Rynek Staromiejski, the main square, and walk to the Town Hall. The Gothic Town Hall (1274) charges 12 PLN to enter and has good views from the tower. Walk south on Zeglarska Street to St. John's Cathedral where Copernicus was baptized. The astronomical clock inside dates to 1472.
Continue to the Teutonic Castle ruins on the north edge of the Old Town. Entry is 10 PLN. The castle was partially demolished in 1454. Walk back along the Vistula promenade (Bulwar Filadelfijski) for the best city views. The whole circuit is 3km and takes 2 to 3 hours at a relaxed pace.
The Copernicus Trail
Nicolaus Copernicus was born in Torun in 1473. The Copernicus House on Kopernika Street is the main museum, with exhibits on his life and astronomy. Entry costs 14 PLN. The house is a 14th-century merchant's house with original architecture. Spend 1.5 hours here.
The Copernicus statue on Rynek Staromiejski is the main photo spot. A second museum, the District Museum in the Old Town Hall, has a section on Copernicus and Torun's medieval history. Together, these 2 sites give a thorough picture of the city's most famous resident.
Torun Gingerbread: A 700-Year Tradition
Torun has been making gingerbread since the 13th century, making it older than most buildings in the Old Town. The Gingerbread Museum on Rabianska Street runs workshops where you press dough into traditional wooden molds and glaze your gingerbread. Cost: 35 PLN per adult, 25 PLN children. Book online.
For buying, Sklep Kopernik on the Old Market Square is the main producer. Their chocolate-covered gingerbread figures (the classic Katarzynka shape) cost 4 to 8 PLN each. Wrapped boxes from 20 PLN make the best souvenir from Torun.
Day Trip: Bydgoszcz
Bydgoszcz is 50km west of Torun, 30 minutes by regional train (14 PLN). The city's main attraction is Wyspa Mlynska (Mill Island), a small island in the Brda River surrounded by restored granaries and a canal system. The area is walkable in 2 hours.
The Bydgoszcz Opera is in a beautiful Art Nouveau building. The Saturday market at Stary Rynek (Old Town Square) runs from 7am to 2pm with local produce and antiques. Combine a Bydgoszcz morning with afternoon return to Torun for a full north Poland day.
Bella Skyway Festival (August)
Bella Skyway Festival transforms the Old Town in late August with light projections on the historic buildings. The Gothic brick facades become massive canvases. The festival runs Thursday to Sunday, 9pm to 1am. Entry is free. The Rynek, Town Hall, and Cathedral are the main projection surfaces.
Accommodation books out 2 to 3 months ahead. If you miss the hotel window, Bydgoszcz (30km, 30 min by train) has rooms and runs free festival shuttles. The festival attracts 200,000+ visitors over 5 nights. It is Torun's biggest event of the year and worth planning a trip around.
Vistula Riverfront and Castle Ruins
The Bulwar Filadelfijski riverfront promenade runs 2km along the Old Town edge of the Vistula. The best sunset views of the river are from the western end near the railway bridge. The promenade has cafes, benches, and good evening light for photography.
The Teutonic Castle ruins at the north end of the Old Town are the remains of the Order's main stronghold, torn down in 1454 after the city revolted. You can walk through the ruins for 10 PLN. The Gdanisko Tower (the medieval toilet tower over the river) is the best-preserved section and makes an unusual photo subject.

Options range from 200 PLN guesthouses on side streets to 600 PLN boutique hotels on the main square. Bella Skyway Festival weeks (August) are 40% more expensive and book out months ahead.

Nowe Miasto is directly north of the Old Town, just outside the historic core. It has its own Gothic church (St. James) and a quieter residential character. Hotels here are 15 to 20% cheaper than Old Town equivalents.
10 minutes walk from the main Rynek. A good choice if Old Town hotels are full during festivals. Limited restaurant options in the immediate area.

Bydgoskie Przedmiescie is Torun's main university area, west of the Old Town. It has the highest concentration of cafes and student bars in the city. The Nicolaus Copernicus University campus is here.
Accommodation is mainly guesthouses and apartments. 15 to 20 minutes walk from the Old Town Rynek. Good for budget travelers who want local atmosphere rather than tourist proximity.

Busy but good. August's Bella Skyway Festival (5 nights) is worth planning around, but book accommodation 3 months ahead. July is warm and pleasant. Weekends see large numbers of Polish domestic tourists.
Autumn (Sep-Nov)
September is the second-best month. Crowds drop sharply after Bella Skyway ends. October brings beautiful light on the brick Gothic facades. November gets cold and grey but prices drop 30%.
Winter (Dec-Feb)
Cold and quiet but the Old Town is beautiful under snow. Christmas market runs December 1 to 23 on the Rynek. January and February are the cheapest and least crowded months of the year.

Bella Skyway Festival (late August, 5 nights) is Torun's biggest event and accommodations in the Old Town fill out 2 to 3 months ahead. If you miss the window, stay in Bydgoszcz (30 min by train, 14 PLN) and take a shuttle in.
The Town Hall tower is the best viewpoint
Torun's Gothic Town Hall has a tower you can climb for 12 PLN. Open 10am to 6pm, closed Mondays. The 360-degree view over the Rynek and Old Town roofline is the best in the city. Go in the late afternoon for warm light on the brick facades.
One street off the Rynek saves you 30-50%
Restaurants directly on Rynek Staromiejski charge tourist prices. Walk one street back to Rozana, Prosta, or Zeglarska Street. The food quality is equal or better, prices are 30 to 50% lower. Pierogarnia Stary Torun on Rozana Street is the best example.
Arrive by train, not car
Torun's Old Town has limited parking and is partially pedestrianized. The Torun Glowny station is directly across the river from the Old Town, 15 minutes walk via the Pilsudski Bridge. Trains from Warsaw cost from 29 PLN and take 2 to 2.5 hours.
Copernicus House: buy tickets online
The Copernicus House Museum on Kopernika Street sells out during summer weekends. Buy tickets online at muzeum.torun.pl for 14 PLN. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 6pm. Allow 1.5 hours for the full exhibition.
Gingerbread makes the best souvenir
Torun gingerbread (pierniki) has been made here for 700 years. Buy from Sklep Kopernik on the Rynek (the main brand) or from smaller shops on Rozana Street. A gift box costs 20 to 60 PLN. The Katarzynka shape is the traditional form. Do not buy from the tourist stalls outside the market.
