Saint-Leu and Roches Noires: worth the drive from Saint-Gilles?
Saint-Leu is 15 km south of Saint-Gilles on the RN1 and home to Iloha Seaview Hotel at Pointe des Chateaux. It's our highest-rated property outside of the luxury tier and the cliffside position there is genuinely dramatic. The Kelonia Sea Turtle Observatory is 5 minutes away by car. Saint-Leu town itself has good Creole restaurants on the seafront and far fewer tourists than Saint-Gilles.
Roches Noires is closer, just 2 km from the Saint-Gilles-les-Bains marina. Hotel Le Saint-Alexis sits on the cliff above the dark volcanic beach there and the setting is unlike anything else on the west coast. The beach itself is not for swimming: waves and currents are strong. But sunsets from the hotel terrace are exceptional and it earns its romantic badge without any argument.
