The Historic Centre on Monte Titano is the obvious choice for first-timers, and it earns that status. Borgo Maggiore is the practical alternative, sitting at the base of the cable car on Via Giacomo Matteotti. Rates here start at $55/night at Locanda dell'Arco, and the funivia gets you up to the city in 10 minutes flat. The trade-off is that you miss the atmosphere of being inside the walls after sunset, when the day-trippers clear out and the city actually breathes.
