Walking the colonial center
Sao Tome City's colonial center is compact and walkable. Start at Independence Square (Praca da Independencia) with its pastel-painted colonial buildings and the pink presidential palace. The square is the city's living room.
Walk south to the cathedral (Se Catedral), built in the 16th century and still the island's most important church. Continue to Fort Sao Sebastiao, now the National Museum, with exhibits on the island's plantation history and slave trade. Entry costs $3.
The Mercado Municipal is 2 blocks east. The fruit section has tropical varieties you have never seen: jaca, fruta-pao, and sao-tomean cocoa pods. The fish section is busiest at 7-8am when the morning catch arrives. Budget 2-3 hours for the full colonial center walk.
Chocolate and cocoa heritage
Sao Tome produces some of the world's finest cocoa, and the industry is experiencing a renaissance. Claudio Corallo's chocolate shop near the cathedral is the star attraction. His single-origin bars ($5-8) are considered among the best in the world.
The CECAB cooperative, 8 km south of the city, offers plantation tours for $10-15 including tasting. You see the entire process from pod to bar. Monte Cafe, a restored colonial plantation 15 km inland, combines cocoa history with mountain scenery.
Diogo Vaz, another local chocolate maker, has a small shop on the waterfront road. Their 73% dark bar uses beans from the Principe island. The cocoa tourism circuit is genuinely world-class and costs less than $30 for a full day of tastings and tours.
Beaches near Sao Tome City
Praia dos Tamarindos is the closest beach, 2 km south of the center. It is a small curve of sand with calm water, good for swimming. Beach vendors sell grilled fish and cold drinks. Not spectacular, but convenient.
Lagoa Azul, 20 km north along the coastal road, is the city's best beach day trip. Turquoise water, coral reef snorkeling, and far fewer people. A taxi costs $15-20 round trip. Bring your own mask and snorkel because there are no rental shops.
Praia Rei, 10 km south, is larger and more secluded. It is popular with locals on weekends. The volcanic black sand contrasts with bright green jungle behind the beach. During turtle season (October-March), olive ridley turtles nest here at night.
Day trip to Roca plantations
Sao Tome's colonial-era rocas (plantations) are the island's most fascinating sites. These massive estates once produced cocoa, coffee, and sugar using forced labor. Many are now partially restored cultural centers.
Roca Agostinho Neto (15 km south) is the most accessible, with a museum, restored workers' quarters, and a restaurant. Entry $5. Roca Agua Ize (20 km south) shows the decay side: abandoned mansions consumed by jungle.
A full-day roca circuit covering 3-4 plantations costs $40-60 with a private driver and guide. The drives between rocas pass through dense tropical forest, cocoa groves, and small villages. Bring water and snacks because facilities are sparse between sites.
Practical tips for the city
Electricity is unreliable. Power cuts happen daily, sometimes for hours. Most hotels have generators but some smaller guesthouses do not. Charge your devices whenever power is available. A portable battery pack is essential.
Internet is slow by Western standards. The fastest connections are at hotels like Pestana and Omali Lodge. SIM cards from CST cost about $5 with limited data. Do not expect to stream video or make reliable video calls.
Pharmacies on the main road stock basic medications. For anything serious, the central hospital on the hill behind the cathedral is the only option. Travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended. The nearest modern hospital is in Lisbon, 7+ hours by air.
Getting beyond the city
A rental car ($40-60/day) opens up the entire island. Sao Tome island is only 50 km long and 30 km wide. You can circumnavigate it in a day. Roads are paved on the main routes but deteriorate quickly on secondary roads.
The southern coast (Rolas, Praia Jale) is the wildest part, with sea turtle nesting beaches and the Equator marker at Ilheu das Rolas. The drive takes 2 hours from the city.
Obo National Park covers the mountainous interior. The Pico de Sao Tome (2,024m) is a challenging 2-day hike with required guide ($50-80). The easier forest walks at Monte Cafe and Bom Sucesso botanical garden cost $5-10 with a guide.
