São Tomé City: What to See and Where to Eat
The National Museum on Rua do Município is worth 2 hours. The Cathedral and the Fortress of São Sebastião are a short walk away on the seafront. The main market on Avenida Marginal 12 de Julho is busiest in the morning from 7am. The colourful wooden houses in the Pantufo district north of the city are worth the 20-minute walk.
For food, the best local restaurants are in the residential streets east of the main market. Ask your hotel to recommend a specific place. Most serve grilled fish with rice, banana, and palm oil sauce for $6-10. The hotel restaurants at Omali Lodge and Pestana are reliable but at tourist prices.
Using Trindade as a Hiking Base
Trindade sits 12km south of São Tomé city on the EN1 road at about 300m altitude. Pensão Turismo here is a simple but functional base for the Pico de São Tomé trail. The trailhead starts at Bom Sucesso botanical garden, a further 8km up the road. A shared taxi from Trindade to the trailhead costs 20,000 STN ($0.80).
The hiking trail passes through four distinct vegetation zones. The upper forest above 1,500m has mist, lichen, and the endemic São Tomé thrush. Guide Augusto, based in Trindade, has 15 years of experience on the mountain and charges $50 for a summit day. Book him through Pensão Turismo.
The Roças: Plantation Hotels and History
The roças are former colonial cacao and coffee plantations, many now converted into small hotels or day-trip destinations. Roça São João at São João dos Angolares is 40km south of the city and has a small guesthouse and one of the best restaurants in the country. The chef trained in Portugal.
Casa Natura near Neves on the north coast offers a more remote experience surrounded by primary forest. Roca Sundy on Príncipe is in a different price league entirely at $320-500 per night but is genuinely one of the finest small hotels in Africa.
Getting Around São Tomé Island
Shared taxis (Toyota pickup trucks with bench seating in the back) cover the main EN1 road from São Tomé city to the south for 5,000-20,000 STN per journey. They depart from the main market area when full. Renting a car costs $60-80 per day from agencies in São Tomé city and gives access to beaches and roças that public transport cannot reach.
The road from São Tomé to Trindade and south is paved. Beyond São João dos Angolares toward Praia Jalé, the road deteriorates into rough tracks requiring a 4x4. Most hotels and roças offer transfers if booked in advance.
Príncipe Island: What to Expect
Príncipe is 145km north of São Tomé and reachable by a 40-minute flight on São Tomé Airways for $100-150 each way. The island has a population of about 6,500 and receives fewer than 5,000 tourists per year. HBD Príncipe is an eco-lodge community near Santo António town at $280-420. Roca Sundy is the prestige choice at $320-500.
Príncipe has pristine beaches, excellent diving, and extraordinary birding. The endemic Príncipe Sunbird and Príncipe Thrush are major draws for birders. The island shuts down in the afternoon rain season. Plan at least 3 nights to justify the flight cost.
Wildlife and Birding
São Tomé and Príncipe has 28 endemic bird species, the highest density of endemism in Africa. The highlands above 1,200m on São Tomé have the greatest diversity. The Obô Natural Park in the south covers 30% of São Tomé island and is the core birding zone. Binoculars are essential.
Sea turtles on Praia Jalé from July to September. Humpback whales pass the islands between July and October and boat trips from São Tomé city run to spot them. Whale watching costs $60-100 per person. The marine life around Príncipe is exceptional for diving and snorkelling with reef sharks, rays, and large fish populations.

The city is compact and walkable. The market and port are the social heart of the capital. Most visitors spend 1-2 nights here before heading south or to Príncipe.

Trindade is a small town 12km south of the capital at the foot of the central highlands. It is the main base for Pico de São Tomé hikers and for exploring the interior roças. Pensão Turismo here is functional and the staff know the mountain guides.
The highland zone above Trindade has coffee plantations, waterfalls, and endemic forest birds. The road from Trindade to Bom Sucesso botanical garden passes through cloud forest. This is the most underrated part of São Tomé for independent travellers.

The south coast from São João dos Angolares to Praia Jalé has the island's most dramatic scenery. Roça São João has a restaurant and guesthouse. The road continues to Porto Alegre and Praia Jalé, where sea turtles nest from July to September.

Dry Season
June to September is the main dry season. Hiking conditions are best, the coast is clearest for snorkelling, and sea turtles nest on Praia Jalé from July. Whales are present offshore from July to October. This is the window for doing everything São Tomé offers.
Short Dry Season
December to February has a shorter dry season called the gravana. It is hotter and more humid than the main dry season but still manageable. A good window for those who cannot visit in June-September. Some rain is possible but rarely sustained.
Long Rains
March to May is the long rainy season. The south road to Praia Jalé becomes impassable. The Pico de São Tomé trail is extremely slippery and dangerous. Most roças in the south operate at reduced capacity. Prices are low but the experience is limited.
Short Rains
October to November is the short rainy season. Briefer than March-May but still disrupts outdoor activities. Hiking is wet and slippery. The sea is rougher for boat trips. Not recommended unless you specifically need this window.
