The biggest mistake we see: booking a cheap hotel near Hijaz Road and assuming you're 'central.' You're not. Hegra is 22km north, Gharameel is 15km northwest, and without a car you'll be paying for taxis every single day. Pick a base in Ashar Valley or AlUla Heritage District and save yourself the hassle.
AlUla isn't a city you wander. It's a destination you plan. Most major sites, Hegra, Dadan, the Incense Road viewpoints, require timed-entry permits booked through the Experience AlUla platform. Don't show up expecting to wing it, especially during Winter at Tantora (December-March) when everything sells out 2-3 weeks ahead.
AlUla on a budget: what's actually possible.
Staying under $100/night in AlUla is doable. Sahary AlUla Resort in Old Town runs $55-85/night and puts you inside the historic mud-brick quarter, literally walking distance from the old souq and the ancient city ruins. AlUla Moon Resort in AlUla Valley is slightly more at $75-110/night but closer to the main archaeological corridor.
The real budget leak isn't the hotel. It's transport. Budget for 200-300 SAR per day in car hire or taxis if you're serious about seeing Hegra, Gharameel, and Maraya in one trip. Pack your own water and snacks too. Options near the sites are limited and overpriced.
Luxury in AlUla: when the price is worth it.
Aman Al Jabal near Jabal AlFil doesn't look like anywhere else on earth. The suites are carved into sandstone ridgelines, and at $420-750/night, you're paying for a specific kind of silence that budget properties simply can't replicate. Banyan Tree AlUla in Ashar Valley gives a similar desert luxury experience from $280/night and is slightly more accessible for couples who want spa facilities alongside the scenery.
Both properties include guided site access, private transport to Hegra, and staff who actually know the archaeology. That matters. We've seen people spend the same money on a weak mid-range room and a stack of taxis and come away with a worse trip overall.
AlUla in peak season: what to expect.
Winter at Tantora runs December through March and this is when AlUla gets genuinely busy. Maraya Concert Hall hosts major international acts, Hegra entry slots sell out weeks ahead, and hotel prices across Ashar Valley and the Heritage District spike 40-60% above off-season rates. Banyan Tree AlUla can hit $450/night during festival weekends.
Book hotels at least 6-8 weeks out for December and January travel. If you're targeting a specific concert at Maraya, confirm your hotel first, then buy the ticket. We've seen people do it the other way around and end up commuting 90 minutes from Tabuk because AlUla was full.
AlUla neighborhoods: a straight comparison.
Ashar Valley is the most photogenic and most resort-heavy area. Habitas AlUla and Banyan Tree both sit here. It's 12-15 minutes by car from the main Hegra entrance and surrounded by the signature red rock formations. AlUla Heritage District is denser, more historic, and better for people who want to walk to the Old Town and Dadan site without driving.
New Downtown near Rasasi Boutique Hotel is the most practical base but the least atmospheric. Gharameel Area is spectacular scenery but genuinely isolated. Good for one or two nights at AlUla Horizons Hotel if you want solitude. Don't base your whole trip there unless you have your own 4WD and confidence on unpaved tracks.
What to avoid when booking in AlUla.
Skip any hotel that uses the word 'views' without specifying what you're looking at. Rock formations in AlUla vary enormously in quality. Some resorts near Hijaz Road show photos of Gharameel in their listings despite being 20km away. Always check the Google Maps pin against the hotel address before booking.
Resort fees are common here and not always disclosed upfront. Three properties we reviewed charged a daily 'heritage experience fee' of 75-120 SAR on top of the room rate. Read the small print on leading booking platforms or the hotel's own site. And avoid booking the cheapest Old Town options during July and August as the lack of effective air conditioning at that price point is a real problem at 42°C.

Ashar Valley is where the serious money goes in AlUla, and honestly it earns it. The valley cuts between towering sandstone ridges, and both Habitas AlUla and Banyan Tree AlUla sit directly inside it. You're 12 minutes by car from the Hegra UNESCO entrance and about 8 minutes from Maraya Concert Hall.
Habitas AlUla at $150-230/night is the accessible entry point here, rated 8.8 and consistently praised for its communal spaces and guided nature programmes. Banyan Tree AlUla from $280-450/night is the full luxury tier with private pool villas and direct cliff-face positioning that no other property in AlUla comes close to matching.
Don't expect to walk anywhere. The valley isn't set up for pedestrians between sites. You'll need a car or use the resort shuttle. But if you're staying at either of these properties, that's built into the experience.

This is the original AlUla. The mud-brick Old Town sits abandoned but preserved, and walking its narrow lanes at sunrise before the day-trippers arrive is genuinely special. Tayba Hotel AlUla in the Heritage District at $195-250/night is the romance pick, positioned close enough to the ancient city walls that you can hear the call to prayer echo off them.
Sahary AlUla Resort in Old Town is the budget end at $55-85/night, rated 7.2. It's fine. Rooms are basic, service is inconsistent, but the location inside the historic quarter is hard to beat at that price. You're 5 minutes walk from the old souq and 20 minutes by car to Dadan.
The Heritage District has improved dramatically since 2022. The main pedestrian strip near Souq Al Nakheel now has decent coffee, local crafts, and evening light projections on the rock faces during festival season. It's not just for history buffs anymore.

Hegra entry slots sell out first during Winter at Tantora (December-March). Lock in your dates on the Experience AlUla platform, then build your hotel booking around them. Don't do this in reverse. We've seen too many people stuck with a confirmed hotel and no Hegra entry for their travel dates.
Ashar Valley is worth the premium. in winter.
Between April and November, the $280-450/night Ashar Valley rates are harder to justify when Shaden Resort in AlUla Valley gives you 80% of the experience at $120-180/night. But during festival season when Maraya is active and the valley is lit up at night, the premium pays off. Seasonal booking strategy matters here more than almost anywhere.
Get a car. Full stop.
Taxis from AlUla New Downtown to Gharameel run 80-120 SAR each way. Do that twice a day for 5 days and you've spent more than a night at Habitas AlUla. Car hire from Prince Abdul Majeed Airport runs 150-250 SAR per day for a 4WD, which is what you want on the tracks around Jabal AlFil and Gharameel.

When Winter at Tantora announce their Maraya concert lineup, usually in October, AlUla's quality hotels sell out within 48 hours for the concert weekends. Subscribe to Experience AlUla's newsletter or check their Instagram in September. Once the lineup drops, you have a two-day window before you're looking at Tabuk as a base.
Dress code applies outside resort grounds.
All 10 vetted hotels are relaxed within their own grounds. But the moment you're in AlUla Old Town, Dadan, Hegra, or anywhere public, dress modestly.
