First time in Casamance? Start here.
Don't fly into Ziguinchor and head straight to Cap Skirring. Spend your first night in Boucotte or Plateau. you'll understand the region better for it. The ferry terminal on the Casamance River, the Marché Saint-Maur, and the Cathédrale Saint-Antoine are all within 20 minutes walk from most Ziguinchor hotels.
From Ziguinchor, take the RN4 west toward Oussouye, then south to Cap Skirring. The whole drive is 90 minutes and the road through the cashew plantations is genuinely beautiful in March and April. Budget at least 4 nights in the region total. 2 in Ziguinchor, 2 on the coast.
Beach hotels: what the photos don't tell you.
Half the 'beachfront' hotels in Casamance are 300-500 metres from the water. We've seen this mistake hundreds of times. Lodge de Kalissaye in Diembéring and Le Manguier at La Paillotte beach in Cap Skirring are genuinely on the beach. not 'near' it.
Cap Skirring's Village beach area around Hôtel Kadiandoumagne gets busy with French package tourists from December through February. If you want something quieter, Diembéring beach is 8 km south and sees a fraction of the footfall. The sand is the same. The crowds aren't.
How to get around Casamance without a car.
Sept-place taxis run between Ziguinchor, Oussouye, and Cap Skirring from the gare routière on Rue de France. A seat to Cap Skirring costs around 3,500-5,000 CFA. They leave when full, so get there by 7am if you want a morning departure. For shorter trips around Ziguinchor, Jakarta motorbike taxis cost 200-500 CFA per ride.
The Dakar-Ziguinchor ferry runs 3 times a week and takes about 14-16 hours overnight. It's a genuinely nice way to arrive. book a cabin, not a seat. The alternative is flying on Air Sénégal, which does the route in under an hour for around $80-150 each way.
Rainy season: what nobody tells you before you book.
June through October is the rainy season and some hotels close entirely. Check directly before booking anything outside Ziguinchor or Cap Skirring. Roads to places like Baïla and Mlomp can become genuinely impassable from August to early October. not slightly difficult. Impassable.
If you do visit in the green season, Ziguinchor actually looks spectacular from July onwards. Rice paddies flood, the forest comes alive, and hotel prices drop 30-50% from peak rates. Hôtel Fleur de Casamance in Boucotte stays open year-round and is a solid base even in the wet months.
The regions beyond Cap Skirring that most visitors miss.
Kolda in eastern Casamance is a completely different world from the coastal strip. It's savanna country, 180 km from Ziguinchor on the RN6, and the Forêt de Bissine nearby is excellent for wildlife. Hôtel Savana is the only proper hotel in town. budget travellers sometimes skip Kolda entirely because of that, which is their loss.
Kabrousse, right on the Guinea-Bissau border, is worth a half-day trip from Cap Skirring. it's only 12 km away. The sacred forest on the village outskirts is the kind of place that doesn't make it into travel articles. Campement Kabrousse is cheap enough at $55-85/night that you can justify an extra night just to explore the area slowly.
Choosing between Ziguinchor's neighbourhoods.
Centre-ville is the most convenient but also the noisiest. You're close to the Marché Saint-Maur and the main banks on Rue du Général de Gaulle, but mosque speakers and market noise start early. Plateau is quieter and elevated. better for light sleepers and anyone who values a morning view over the city.
Boucotte is the middle ground. It's residential and calm at night, 15 minutes walk to the centre, and that's where Hôtel Fleur de Casamance sits. Avoid booking anything near the Boudody gare routière. the transport hub generates noise and petty theft risks that aren't worth saving $20/night.

Ziguinchor is where most trips begin, and for good reason. The city sits on the north bank of the Casamance River, and the waterfront stretch near the ferry terminal on Boulevard du Général de Gaulle is genuinely pleasant in the early morning. The Marché Saint-Maur is 10 minutes walk from most hotels and worth at least an hour of your time.
Hotels range from the budget Auberge du Routard in Centre-ville at $45-70/night up to the Ziguinchor Palace Hotel on the Plateau at $285-420/night. That's a massive spread for one city, and the quality difference is real. Hôtel Fleur de Casamance in Boucotte at $100-145/night hits the sweet spot for most travellers.
Avoid the area around the Boudody gare routière for sleeping. it's fine for catching a taxi but not for a hotel base. The Plateau neighbourhood is the safest and most comfortable after dark, and it's only a 20-minute walk down to the centre.

Cap Skirring is the most visited part of Casamance and it earns that status. The beach at La Paillotte is 5 km of near-empty Atlantic coastline for most of the year, and the water is warm from October through May. French tourists have been coming here since the 1970s. that's not a warning, it's just context.
Le Manguier at La Paillotte beach is $260-380/night and worth every franc for a special occasion. Hôtel Kadiandoumagne in the Village beach area is $120-175/night and caters to a more package-tour crowd. Both are solid but the atmospheres are completely different. Le Manguier feels like a retreat, Kadiandoumagne feels like a resort.
Kabrousse is 12 km from Cap Skirring and most visitors drive past it without stopping. That's a mistake. Campement Kabrousse at $55-85/night gives you village life, the sacred forest, and proximity to the border landscape that feels nothing like the touristy coast.

Diembéring sits 8 km south of Cap Skirring on a sandy track and most visitors never bother making the detour. Big mistake. The beach here is calmer, cleaner, and sees a fraction of the traffic. Lodge de Kalissaye is right on the beachfront at $110-160/night and has built a loyal following among repeat Casamance visitors.
The Parc National de Basse Casamance, near Oussouye, is about 30 minutes drive from Diembéring. Bird counts in the park run to over 200 species. it's one of the better birding spots in West Africa and most people fly over it on the way to the beach. Budget a half-day if you're staying in the area.
The road to Diembéring is passable in a regular car from November through June. From July onward, conditions deteriorate fast. If you're visiting in the green season, confirm road access directly with Lodge de Kalissaye before booking.

This is Casamance without the sunscreen-and-cocktails version. Baïla sits on a riverside at $130-180/night at Auberge de Baïla, and it's genuinely one of the most atmospheric places to stay in the entire region. The pirogue trips on the river at dawn are worth the price of the room on their own.
Mlomp is a Diola village most famous for its ancient two-storey tower houses. you can walk to them in 15 minutes from Campement Hôtel Mlomp. The hotel at $145-195/night is family-oriented and relaxed, with a big compound and grounds that give kids room to breathe. It's a long drive from the coast. about 90 minutes. but the region makes sense as a 2-night extension.
Kolda is the furthest east at 180 km from Ziguinchor on the RN6.
