Saly Beach is where the ocean-front properties sit. Lamantin, Royam, and Club Aldiana are all within 400m of each other along the main beachfront road, and all three have legitimate direct sand access. You pay for it: expect $120-240/night minimum in this zone.
Saly Centre is cheaper by 30-40%, but the tradeoff is real. You're often 10-15 minutes from the beach on foot, crossing a busy road. Résidence Mabouya and Saly Hotel are the honest picks here. Don't let anyone tell you Saly Centre is 'steps from the beach.' It isn't.
The all-inclusive question: worth it in Saly?
At Riu Baobab or Club Aldiana, all-inclusive actually makes financial sense. Meals at sit-down restaurants in Saly Portudal run $15-30 per person. Add drinks and you're easily at $60-80/day per couple outside the resort. The all-inclusive rate starts to look smart pretty quickly.
The catch is you end up eating resort food every night and never finding places like Le Languoustier on the beachfront strip or the grilled fish spots near the Mbour road junction. If you're here for Senegalese culture and food, skip AI. If you want sun, sand, and zero decisions, Riu Baobab at $290-480/night is genuinely worth it.
Getting around Saly without getting ripped off
Taxis inside Saly Portudal should cost 1,000-2,000 CFA (about $1.50-3.50) for short hops. From Saly Beach to Saly Nord takes about 10 minutes and shouldn't cost more than 3,000 CFA. Negotiate before you get in. There are no meters.
For Dakar day trips, sept-places from the Mbour gare routière are the cheapest option at around 2,500-3,000 CFA each way. Some hotels will offer shuttle services to Dakar at $25-40 per seat, which is genuinely not worth it unless you're in a group and value the door-to-door convenience.
Saly Nord: the case for staying further from the action
Saly Niakh Niakhal, the neighbourhood anchoring Saly Nord, is genuinely calmer. Auberge Le Baobab at $60-90/night gives you a real West African boutique feel that the beach-strip resorts have largely traded away for poolside bars. You're 15-20 minutes by taxi from the main Saly Beach action.
Le Flamboyant Hotel also sits in this northern zone and consistently punches above its $105-160/night price point. The trade-off: you'll need a taxi every time you want beach access. But if you're here for Somone Lagoon day trips or the Bandia Reserve, Saly Nord's position closer to the RN1 actually saves you time.
When to book and when prices move in Saly
December 20 through January 5 is the peak of peak season. French and Belgian tourists flood in, and beachfront hotels sell out 8-10 weeks ahead. Lamantin Beach and Terrou-Bi both spike to their ceiling rates in this window. Book by mid-October if you're traveling over Christmas or New Year.
The sweet spot is November or late February to mid-March. Temperatures sit at 24-28°C, the harmattan wind has settled, and you'll find $130-180/night rates at properties that charge $220+ in December. Easter week (March-April) brings another mini-spike, so bracket your trip either side of it.
Day trips worth planning from your Saly hotel
Joal-Fadiouth is 35km south of Saly Portudal and takes about 45 minutes by car. The Shell Island connected by a footbridge is genuinely unlike anything else in West Africa. Hire a driver from your hotel for around $40-50 for the half-day rather than joining a group tour at $70-90 per person.
The Somone Lagoon is practically next door: 7km north of Saly Beach, about 15 minutes by taxi. Bird watching there is best between November and April when migratory species are in residence. The lagoon-side restaurants serve fresh grilled fish for $8-12 a plate, which beats most resort menus at double the price.

This is the heart of Saly Portudal's tourist zone. Lamantin Beach Resort, Royam Hotel, Club Aldiana, and Terrou-Bi all sit along this stretch of coastline between the Saly Beach roundabout and the southern point. You're paying for the access: most rooms are a 2-5 minute walk from sand.
The beachfront road here gets lively at night with restaurant terraces, bar music, and vendors selling everything from jewellery to excursions. It's not quiet. If that bothers you, Saly Nord is a better fit. But for proximity to the ocean and the energy of Saly's tourist core, this zone delivers.
Expect to pay $120-420/night depending on the property. Terrou-Bi is the clear luxury anchor here at $270-420/night, with Royam and Club Aldiana filling the solid mid-to-upper tier. Nothing in this zone should be called budget.

The artisan market is within easy walking distance, and the local restaurants near the main junction serve proper Senegalese thiéboudienne for $3-6 a plate. This is where you eat if you want to spend less and experience more. Saly Hotel actually punches high for this zone with an 8.6 rating and $115-185/night rates that undercut comparable Saly Beach properties.
Don't come here expecting peace and quiet. The Route de Saly carries a fair amount of traffic and noise, especially around midday. But for travelers who want to use Saly as a base rather than a bubble, this zone makes a lot of practical sense.

The atmosphere is noticeably different. Fewer touts, less traffic, more local residents going about their day. The road running through Saly Niakh Niakhal connects north toward Somone village, making it a natural base for the lagoon. Early morning taxi to Somone costs 2,000-3,000 CFA.
The honest downside: you need a taxi to get to the main beach zone. It's 15-20 minutes and $2-4 each way. If you're a beach-every-day type, this adds up. But if you're mixing beach days with excursions to Bandia or Joal, you won't notice the difference.
