Hotel Vojvodina on Trg Slobode itself or Hotel Prezident a few blocks away are the two most practical picks for first-timers. Both are rated above 8.5, both put you in the middle of everything, and neither is going to embarrass you. Don't overthink it.

Exit runs at Petrovaradin Fortress every July and it is the biggest event in the Serbian calendar. Hotel Leopold I is literally inside the fortress walls. it sells out by February. Everything else within 2km goes fast too.
If you miss the fortress hotels, book on the City Center side and budget 15 minutes to walk over the Varadinski Bridge each night. It's actually a decent walk after a show. But book 3-4 months out minimum, and don't wait for a price drop. it won't come.

City Center and Trg Slobode are the sweet spot. walkable, lively, and priced between $75-165/night for most decent options. Petrovaradin across the bridge is quieter and more atmospheric. Liman is residential and calm, good for business travelers. Futog is a suburb 8km out. only worth it if you're staying at Rimski Hotel specifically.
Avoid the stretch along Bulevar Jaše Tomića near the bus terminal. Hotels there use the 'central Novi Sad' label loosely. You're 20+ minutes from anything good, and you'll feel it every single day of your trip.
How to get the best hotel price in Novi Sad.
Shoulder season here is real. May, early June, and September offer good weather, zero festival crowds, and prices 25-35% lower than peak July. A room at Hotel Centar on Dunavska Street that costs $165/night in Exit week drops to $120 or under in September.
Book direct when you can. Several Novi Sad hotels including Hotel Vojvodina offer a small discount or free breakfast for direct bookings. Call them. It's a small city and the front desk actually picks up.
Novi Sad with kids: what actually works.
Strand Beach on the Danube is free, clean, and 20 minutes walk from the City Center. It's the reason families come in summer. Pair that with a base at Garni Hotel Aleksandar in Adamovićevo naselje, which has more space and quieter surroundings than anything in the center.
Futoški Park near the western edge of the city is good for a half-day. The fortress is fun for older kids who can handle the climb up from the Danube side. about 10 minutes up the ramp from the riverside. Younger kids burn out fast on cobblestones, so plan accordingly.
Romantic Novi Sad: where to stay and what to skip.
Rimski Hotel in Futog is the top romantic pick in the region. $290-420/night, spa, riverside setting, and far enough from the city noise that it actually feels like an escape. Hotel Leopold I inside Petrovaradin Fortress is a close second, with Danube views and a legitimate atmosphere you can't manufacture.
Skip the idea of a 'romantic City Center hotel' unless you're both heavy sleepers. Trg Slobode on a Friday night in summer is loud until 2am. Square Nine Novi Sad is quiet and upscale at $175-230/night, but for true romance the fortress or Futog beat it on atmosphere every time.

Prices here run from $45/night at Hostel Bongo to $230/night at Square Nine Novi Sad. That's an honest spread and you're paying for location across the board. The neighborhood rewards foot traffic. Laze Teleckog Street has some of the best kafanas in the city, and you can walk to all of them.
One thing worth knowing: weekend nights get loud around Bulevar Mihajla Pupina. If you're a light sleeper, request a courtyard-facing room at Hotel Prezident or Hotel Vojvodina when you book. It makes a difference.

Petrovaradin sits across the Varadinski Bridge from the City Center, about 15 minutes on foot from Trg Slobode. The fortress itself dominates the hill above the Danube. you can see it from most of the city. Hotel Leopold I is inside the fortress walls, which is as good as it sounds. Hotel Fontana is just below on the Petrovaradin side, quieter and cheaper at $75-99/night.
This area is calmer than the City Center. The streets around Petrovaradin have a neighborhood feel that the tourist center doesn't. small bakeries, local bars, residents who actually live there. It's a 10-minute walk down to the Danube bank from the fortress gate.
During Exit Festival, the entire fortress site transforms overnight. If you're here for the music, Leopold I is unbeatable. If you're not, July is probably the wrong month to stay here unless you love crowds and have earplugs.

Hotel Centar on Dunavska Street bridges the gap between Liman and the center at $120-165/night.
Liman Park is one of the better green spaces in the city, good for a morning run. The neighborhood has local restaurants and kafanas that don't inflate prices for tourists. a solid dinner for two runs $15-20 without trying hard. That alone makes it worth considering.
The tradeoff is distance. You're not far from anything in a city this size, but if you want to wander out at midnight and find something open, the center has more options. Liman is a good base if you have a reason to be there. business, longer stays, or just preferring peace over proximity.
