A half-day in Victoria: what to see
Victoria takes 2-3 hours to walk. Start at the Clock Tower (a miniature of London Big Ben, built 1903) on Francis Rachel Street. Walk south to Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market. The ground floor has fresh fish, fruit, and spices. Upstairs has crafts and souvenirs.
Continue to the Hindu Arul Mihu Navasakthi Vinayagar Temple on Quincy Street, the only Hindu temple in Seychelles. The carved gopuram is photogenic. Then walk uphill to the National Botanical Gardens (SCR 100/$7.50, 30 minutes). Giant tortoises, coco de mer palms, and fruit bats.
Lunch at Marie Antoinette (SCR 350 for Creole buffet) or La Plaine St Andre (SCR 200-300 for mains and rum tasting). Afternoon: catch a bus or taxi to Beau Vallon beach (15 minutes). Done.
Mahe island beaches: the honest ranking
Beau Vallon is the most popular and accessible. 1.7 km of sand, calm water, sunset views. Gets crowded on weekends. Beach vendors can be persistent.
Anse Intendance (south coast) is the most beautiful. Wild surf, granite boulders, no development. Not safe for swimming when waves are up, but stunning to walk. Hotel Banyan Tree sits above it.
Anse Royale (southeast) is the best for swimming. Shallow, protected reef, calm water. Local families picnic here on Sundays. Kaz Kreol restaurant serves grilled fish for SCR 250. Anse Soleil is the secret pick: tiny cove, 10 cars max, a single restaurant (Anse Soleil Cafe, SCR 200 for fish curry).
Getting around Mahe on a budget
SPTC public buses cover the entire island. Every route goes through Victoria. Fare: SCR 7 ($0.50) per ride, exact change required. Buses run 5:30am-7pm, every 15-30 minutes on popular routes. No service on Sundays after 5pm.
Taxis are expensive. Victoria to Beau Vallon: SCR 200 ($15). Victoria to airport: SCR 400-500. No meters, negotiate before getting in. Agree on the price clearly.
Car rental is the best option for beach hopping. Cheapest at SCR 600/day ($45) from local companies like Hertz Seychelles or Kreol Cars. The island is only 28 km long. Fill up at the two gas stations in Victoria. Drive on the left.
Day trips from Victoria
Praslin: Cat Cocos ferry from Victoria (1 hour, SCR 1,400 round trip). Visit Vallee de Mai (UNESCO, SCR 430/$32, home to the coco de mer palm). Anse Lazio beach is 30 minutes from the ferry terminal. Book early morning ferry, return on the 4:30pm.
La Digue: ferry from Praslin (15 min extra). Rent a bicycle (SCR 150/day) and ride to Anse Source d Argent, arguably the world s most photographed beach. The granite boulders are surreal. Entry through L Union Estate (SCR 115/$8.50).
Sainte Anne Marine National Park: glass-bottom boat tours from Victoria harbor (SCR 1,000/$75 with snorkeling and lunch). Good coral, calm water, turtles. Half-day trip, multiple operators on the Victoria waterfront.
Where to eat around Victoria
Marie Antoinette in a colonial house on Serret Road. Creole buffet (SCR 350/$26) with grilled fish, octopus curry, breadfruit, and tropical fruit. The best introduction to Seychellois cuisine. Reservations recommended for dinner.
La Plaine St Andre near the Botanical Gardens. Takamaka rum distillery tasting (SCR 150 for 3 rums). Restaurant serves curries and grilled fish (SCR 200-350). Nice garden setting.
For budget eats: Sel e Pepe takeaway near the bus station does rice and curry plates for SCR 75 ($5.50). The market fish stalls sell fresh tuna for SCR 100/kg. Indian Ocean Cafe on Palm Street does solid sandwiches for SCR 100.
Seychelles on a budget: it is possible
Seychelles has a reputation as a luxury-only destination. That is outdated. Guesthouses and self-catering apartments have opened up budget travel since 2015.
Stay in Victoria or Mont Fleuri (SCR 1,200-1,800/night for guesthouses). Cook in your room with market fish (SCR 100/kg) and fruit. Take the bus everywhere (SCR 7). Free beaches are everywhere. Snorkel gear rental: SCR 200/day.
Budget daily cost: SCR 2,000-3,000 ($150-220) per person including accommodation, food, and transport. That is half the cost of a resort stay. Not cheap by Southeast Asian standards, but manageable for a once-in-a-lifetime destination.

Victoria has about 25,000 residents and takes 30 minutes to walk end to end. The city center clusters around Independence Avenue and the market. Hotels here are limited but put you closest to the ferry terminal for island-hopping.
The Clock Tower, market, botanical gardens, and Hindu temple are all within a 15-minute walk. Evening dining options are better in Beau Vallon, but Pirates Arms and La Plaine St Andre hold their own.
