Aberdeen vs. Lumley: Which side should you stay on?
Aberdeen is the more connected choice. You're close to Aberdeen Bridge, the beach strip, and Spur Road's restaurant scene, all within a 10-minute walk from most hotels. It's where Radisson Blu and Bintumani both sit, which tells you it works across budget levels.
Lumley is quieter and more beach-forward. Family Kingdom Resort and The Place Resort both sit right on or near Lumley Beach Road, and the vibe at night is more relaxed than Aberdeen's bar strip. If the beach is your main reason for being here, stay in Lumley.
Getting from Lungi Airport to your Freetown hotel
The airport is on the other side of the estuary, which surprises a lot of first-timers. The ferry from Lungi to Government Wharf Pier runs multiple times daily and costs around $5-10 per person. From the wharf, it's a 20-30 minute taxi ride to Aberdeen or Lumley depending on traffic.
The hovercraft is faster at about 20 minutes, but it doesn't run in rough weather and schedules shift. If you're arriving late or with a lot of luggage, arrange a hotel transfer in advance. Radisson Blu and Cape Sierra both offer airport pickup for a fixed fee. Don't just wing it on arrival if you can avoid it.
Rainy season vs. dry season: what changes for hotels
Freetown's rainy season runs May through October, and it rains hard. Roads flood, including parts of Wilkinson Road and the lower Aberdeen area. Some budget hotels suffer real water intrusion issues during peak rains in July and August. This is when mid-range and up starts to make more sense for comfort.
Dry season from November through April is peak travel time and prices reflect it. Expect Aberdeen and Lumley Beach hotels to charge 25-40% more in December and around Easter. Book at least 6 weeks ahead for December. The upside: the sky is clear, the beach is perfect, and Hill Station has incredible views over the peninsula.
The neighborhoods that don't make the tourist map but should
Hill Station sits above Freetown in the Western Area, and it genuinely feels like a different city. Country Lodge Complex is up here, and the cooler air and quieter streets make the extra taxi ride worth it. It's about 20-25 minutes from Aberdeen by road, longer during rush hour on Wilkinson Road.
Congo Cross is where Sierra Lighthouse Hotel sits, and it's a solid middle ground between the beach and the business district. You're 15 minutes from Lumley Beach and about the same from the central Cotton Tree area on Siaka Stevens Street. Locals eat well here, and the hotel strip is less chaotic than the Aberdeen waterfront.
What to know before booking a beachfront hotel in Freetown
Not every hotel advertising beach access actually has it. Some properties we reviewed showed beach photos that were a 15-minute walk from the actual rooms. Family Kingdom Resort and Tokeh Beach Resort are the two properties where the beach is genuinely right there.
Tokeh Beach is 45 minutes south of Freetown near Regent village, and the resort there is a different category of beach experience from anything in the city. The water is cleaner, the sand is wider, and it's dramatically less crowded than Lumley. If a beach stay is the main event, Tokeh is worth the extra distance.
Freetown for business travelers: what actually matters
Power reliability is the real issue. Many hotels run on generators during load-shedding, which happens regularly. Radisson Blu and Mamba Point Hotel both have robust backup power, which matters if you're on calls or working late. Don't assume this at cheaper properties without asking directly.
Mamba Point is the business district's closest hotel strip. You're within 10 minutes of most embassies including the US Embassy on Southridge, and NGO offices are heavily concentrated in this area. Conference facilities at Mamba Point Hotel are functional. Radisson Blu is a step up and has hosted major international meetings. Budget the difference if your clients or partners are important.

Aberdeen is where most visitors end up, and for good reason. It's the closest you'll get to a hotel district in Freetown, running along Aberdeen Road and Spur Road with restaurants, bars, and beach access within easy walking distance. Radisson Blu sits at the top end, Bintumani covers the budget side.
Spur Road is worth knowing. It's the main commercial artery through Aberdeen, with Santeria restaurant, Mamba restaurant, and several local chop bars within a 5-minute walk of most hotels. You won't starve or run out of things to do in this area.
Watch out for Aberdeen Road near the bridge during morning rush hour. Taxis stack up and it can take 30 minutes to travel a few hundred meters. Walk if you're headed somewhere close.

Lumley Beach Road runs along the ocean and it's one of the more pleasant streets in Freetown to actually be on. Family Kingdom Resort has a proper water park and sits right on the sand. The Place Resort is a few minutes inland but still close enough that beach access is genuinely convenient.
Weekends here get lively. Local families and Freetown's middle class flock to the beach from around 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays, especially near the Mamba restaurant end of the strip. It's a good energy, but if you want quiet mornings, you have them. the beach is nearly empty before 10am.
Dining options on Lumley Beach Road are strong for West Africa. Gigibonta Restaurant and the beachside bars offer fresh fish and local rice dishes for well under $10. You don't need to eat in your hotel here.

Hill Station sits in the Western Area hills above the city, and Country Lodge Complex up here is genuinely one of the better value stays in Freetown. Temperatures run 3-5°C cooler than the coast, which sounds trivial until you've spent a night sweating at sea level. It's about 25 minutes from Aberdeen on a good day.
Congo Cross is the urban middle ground, sitting between the beach and downtown along Wilkinson Road. Sierra Lighthouse Hotel operates here, and it's a sensible base if your schedule mixes embassy meetings, NGO visits, and some evening socializing. You're equidistant from most of the city's key points.
