Getting On and Around Sentosa
The Sentosa Express from Harbourfront Station costs SGD 4 per person and takes 5 minutes to Beach Station. The free shuttle buses on Sentosa cover three routes (Beach, Imbiah, and Resort World). Most attractions are within 10 to 15 minutes walk of the main stations. Grab taxis operate on the island and are the easiest option for late evenings.
The Sentosa Boardwalk is a free covered walkway connecting VivoCity mall to Beach Station. It takes about 10 minutes to walk and is pleasant in the morning. Cycling is possible on designated paths between attractions. Rental bikes cost SGD 15 to 20 per hour from kiosks near Siloso Beach.
Choosing Between the Beach Zone and Resorts World
The island divides into two distinct experiences. Resorts World on the northern coast concentrates hotels, Universal Studios, the casino, S.E.A. Aquarium, and multiple restaurants. It is noisy, busy, and self-contained. Hotels here are the Hard Rock Hotel (SGD 200 to 400), Festive Hotel (SGD 180 to 320), and Equarius Hotel (SGD 300 to 500).
The southern beach strip from Siloso to Palawan to Tanjong Beach is quieter and more pleasant. Capella Singapore sits at the western end away from the theme parks. If theme parks are not your priority, the beach strip offers a more relaxing stay. The Siloso Beach Walk path connects all three beaches.
Making the Most of Universal Studios
Arrive at 9:30am for the 10am opening and head immediately to the Transformers: The Ride 3D or Battlestar Galactica: Human vs. Cylon before queues build. Use the Express Pass (SGD 30 to 60 on top of entry) for popular rides if visiting on a weekend or school holiday. Budget at least 6 hours for a full visit.
The park's most underrated zone is the Sci-Fi City section with the two Battlestar Galactica roller coasters. The standing coaster (CYLON) has the more intense ride. Far East Organization Far East Plaza in the Ancient Egypt zone has short queues most mornings. Avoid buying food inside the park at the dedicated kiosks. Better and cheaper options are at Waterfront at the park entrance.
The Beach Experience: What to Expect
Sentosa's beaches are constructed and maintained rather than natural, but they are clean and usable. Siloso Beach has the most activity: beach volleyball courts, kayak rentals at SGD 20 to 30 per hour, and wave surfing at Wave House. Palawan Beach is calmer and has a small island connected by a suspension bridge that marks the southernmost point of continental Asia.
Tanjong Beach Club is the island's premium beach club, open from 11am daily. Entry is free on weekdays. Weekend entry costs SGD 50 to 80 as a minimum spend. The pool is small but the setting is excellent. Book a sun lounger in advance for weekend visits.
Where to Eat on Sentosa
The best value meal on the island is at the hawker stalls inside Resorts World's food street, where local dishes cost SGD 8 to 15. Coastes at Siloso Beach serves decent Western food with beach views for around SGD 25 to 40 per person. Palio at Capella is the best restaurant on the island for a proper dinner, serving Italian food in a colonial building with attentive service at around SGD 60 to 90 per person.
Avoid the beach bar restaurants along Siloso Beach for food: they charge premium prices for average quality. VivoCity mall on the mainland, 10 minutes away, has much better and more diverse dining options including the excellent Food Republic food court on level 3.
When to Go and When to Skip Sentosa
Sentosa works well for visitors spending 3 or more days in Singapore who want a leisure day separate from city sightseeing. One full day covers the beaches and most of the free attractions. Two days are needed if including Universal Studios. Any more than 3 days on the island and you will run out of things to do.
Skip Sentosa entirely if you are in Singapore for under 48 hours. The cable car, Universal Studios, and Resorts World casino are the only experiences not replicated on the mainland. Prioritize the Singapore Botanic Gardens, Gardens by the Bay, Chinatown, and Haji Lane instead.
