Book in Štrbské Pleso or Starý Smokovec for your first visit. Both sit directly on the TEŽ railway line, so you're never stranded. and the main trailheads, the Magistrála long-distance path, and most decent restaurants are within 10 minutes on foot.
Don't obsess over getting the 'best' hotel on your first trip. A mid-range place like Hotel Smokovec in Starý Smokovec town center or Hotel Toliar on the Štrbské Pleso lakeside gives you great positioning for under $160/night. Spend the savings on the Lomnický štít cable car from Tatranská Lomnica. that's €30-40 return and worth every cent.
Ski season: what to know before you book.
The Štrbské Pleso ski area is small: 14 km of groomed runs centered around the FIS slalom stadium on the western edge of the lake. It's best for intermediates and families. Serious skiers tend to combine it with day trips to Jasná in Low Tatras (45 minutes by car), which has 36 km of varied terrain.
Book ski-season rooms in Štrbské Pleso at least 6-8 weeks ahead for January and February. Hotel FIS is the closest hotel to the lifts. you're literally 200 m from the Interski lift base. Kempinski is grander but 10 minutes walk from the slopes, which matters more than you'd think after a long day on the mountain.
The Tatras on a budget: it's doable.
You can do the High Tatras well for $55-85/night. Penzión Encián in Tatranská Lomnica village center is the tightest budget option, and Penzión Slnečný Dom in Lower Smokovec (Dolný Smokovec, about 8 minutes walk from Starý Smokovec station) gives you a solid base for $68-95/night. Both include breakfast, which cuts your daily food spend noticeably.
The TEŽ day pass at ~€6 is your biggest money-saver. Buy it at Poprad main station or at any TEŽ ticket office before you board. Pack your own lunch for hike days. snack bars on popular trails like the Popradské Pleso route charge tourist prices, roughly €6-10 for a basic goulash.
Luxury in the Tatras: worth the spend.
Two properties justify their price tags completely. Kempinski Hotel The High Tatras at $280-450/night sits in the Grand Hotel area of Štrbské Pleso with direct lakefront access and the best spa in the entire range. Hotel Lomnica on its own estate grounds in Tatranská Lomnica ($310-480/night) is more intimate. think 19th-century hunting lodge energy with proper fine dining.
Neither feels overpriced once you're inside. The Kempinski's infinity pool overlooks the lake and the Vysoké Tatry peaks. that view at sunrise is something you won't find anywhere else in Slovakia. At Hotel Lomnica, ask for the estate-facing junior suite on the second floor. The garden rooms are quieter than the road-facing ones.
Hiking season: how to plan your base.
June-September is the real window for serious hiking. Trails above 2,000 m in the TANAP national park require a guide if you're heading off marked routes, and some exposed ridge paths (like the route to Kriváň at 2,494 m) need prior fitness. The park charges no entrance fee, but rescue insurance via Horská záchranná služba is strongly advised.
Base yourself in Starý Smokovec for maximum flexibility: the Hrebienok funicular is a 15-minute walk up from the main square, and you can reach Tatranská Lomnica or Štrbské Pleso in 20-30 minutes by TEŽ. If you're there specifically for the Rysy climb (Slovakia's highest accessible peak at 2,499 m), book Štrbské Pleso. the Chata pod Rysmi trail starts just 800 m from the TEŽ station.
Shoulder season: the local secret.
May and October are genuinely excellent. Hotel prices sit 20-30% below summer peak, the trails aren't crowded, and the light on the granite peaks in October is extraordinary. Average temperatures run 8-15°C in May and 4-10°C in October at valley level. cool enough for serious walking, warm enough to sit outside in Starý Smokovec's main square with a coffee.
The one catch: some mountain huts (chaty) like Zbojnícka chata above Hrebienok close after mid-October and don't reopen until June. Check the TANAP website before planning a multi-day hut route in shoulder season. For spring wildflower trails, the slopes around Tatranská Lomnica between the village center and the cable car base are as good as anywhere in the Tatras.

The lakeside promenade (Promenáda) is 2.5 km around the lake and flat enough for kids and post-dinner walks. The TEŽ station sits 5 minutes walk from the Kempinski and 8 minutes from Wellness Hotel Patria. Ski season gets very busy: the FIS World Cup slalom stadium on the western shore draws spectators in January who book months ahead.
Avoid the cluster of older apartment-style blocks on the eastern side of the lake toward Tatranská Štrbá. they look convenient on a map but they're a 15-minute walk from the promenade and feel removed from everything.
