Old Town vs Lent District: where to actually stay
Old Town is the obvious choice and it earns the reputation. You're within 5 minutes walk of Glavni trg, the Cathedral on Slomškov trg, and Maribor Castle. Hotel Orel sits right in the middle of it, and Hotel Zlatnik is the top-end option on the Old Town edge.
Lent is quieter and more atmospheric, especially in the evenings when the riverfront restaurants along the Drava light up. Hotel Garni Maribor is the standout here. It's less touristy than Old Town and you still reach Glavni trg in about 10 minutes on foot.
Pohorje hotels: what you're actually signing up for
Staying on Pohorje means trading city convenience for forest, ski slopes, and spa access. Hotel Habakuk and Hotel Wellness Rimski Dvor are both up here. You're looking at 10-15 minutes by car to reach central Maribor, or you can take the Pohorje gondola from Pohorska ulica down into town.
It's the right call if you're here specifically to ski (winter), hike (summer), or do a proper wellness retreat. Don't book Pohorje if you want to bar-hop on Koroška cesta at night. it just doesn't work logistically without a car.
The Lent Festival: how to plan your hotel booking around it
The Lent Festival turns Maribor's riverfront into Slovenia's biggest street party for two weeks in late June. Every venue along the Drava gets packed. Old Town and Lent District hotels sell out 8 weeks out, and prices jump 40-60% across the board.
If you're coming for the festival, book as soon as dates are announced (usually February). If you're not, avoid late June entirely or stay in Betnava or the City Center and commute in on bus line 6. You'll save $60-100/night and still reach the festival in 15 minutes.
Wine country and the Old Vine: using Maribor as a base
Maribor sits at the edge of the Štajerska wine region, and the Old Vine on Vojašniška ulica is the world's oldest producing grapevine. That's not marketing. It's in the Guinness records and it's about 6 minutes walk from Hotel Orel. Wine cellar tastings in the Lent District run €10-20 per person.
For day trips into the surrounding vineyards, Hotel Betnava in the Betnava neighborhood gives you easier road access east toward Ptuj and the Haloze Hills without fighting Old Town traffic every morning.
Getting around Maribor without a car
Most of Maribor is walkable if you stay centrally. Old Town to Lent is about 7 minutes. Old Town to Piramida Hill is 20 minutes. The City Center cluster around Partizanska cesta connects to everything via bus lines 3, 6, and 13. Taxis are cheap: cross-town runs stay under €10.
The Pohorje cable car on Pohorska ulica is the one must-use transit link. It takes you from the city edge up to Pohorje mountain in 12 minutes and runs daily. If you're staying at Hotel Habakuk or Rimski Dvor, this is your main connection to urban Maribor.
Budget vs luxury in Maribor: what each level actually gets you
At the budget end, $45-70/night at Hostel Pekarna gets you a bed in a genuinely cool converted cultural space in the Magdalena District, not a grim box near the bus station. Hotel Orel at $75-99/night is a real step up: a proper hotel room in Old Town with breakfast included most nights.
At the top, Hotel Zlatnik ($290-390/night) and Hotel Wellness Rimski Dvor ($260-340/night) are worth it without apology. Zlatnik is the finest address in Old Town Center. Rimski Dvor is a full thermal spa experience on Pohorje. Both deliver on the price tag.

This is where most first-time visitors should stay. You're on foot to Glavni trg, Maribor Castle, the Cathedral on Slomškov trg, and the Old Vine on Vojašniška ulica. Evenings along the Lent waterfront are genuinely lovely.
Hotels here range from $75/night at Hotel Orel to $290-390/night at Hotel Zlatnik. The gap in quality between those two is real, but both are good. Lent District properties tend to be quieter and more residential in feel than the Old Town core.
Avoid booking anything advertised as 'Old Town adjacent' near Mlinska ulica or the bus station end. You'll pay Old Town prices for a location that's actually a 20-minute walk from the good stuff.
