Sandton vs. Rosebank: where should you actually stay?
Sandton is Joburg's financial heartbeat. Nelson Mandela Square, the Sandton Convention Centre on Maude Street, and the Gautrain station are all within 5 minutes of each other. which makes it almost too easy. But it's corporate by nature, and you'll spend a lot of time inside the Sandton City complex if you're not intentional about getting out.
Rosebank on Jan Smuts Avenue has a different feel. It's walkable, has the Rosebank Mall and The Zone, and Keyes Avenue has some of the best casual dining in the city. The Gautrain connection means you're still 12 minutes from the airport. If you're here for more than 3 nights and want to feel like a human rather than a conference attendee, Rosebank is the smarter base.
Getting around Johannesburg without losing your mind
The Gautrain is your anchor. It runs from OR Tambo Airport through Sandton, Rosebank, and down to Park Station in central Joburg. Single trips cost R40-200 ($2-11) depending on distance, and it runs from 05:30 to 22:00 on weekdays. Outside those hours, you're on Uber.
Uber works well in the northern suburbs. Sandton, Melrose, Rivonia, Illovo. Budget R80-150 ($4-8) for most short hops. Don't hail a random cab from the street. And if someone offers you a 'special price' taxi near OR Tambo's arrivals hall, just open the Uber app instead. We've seen that mistake too many times.
When to visit Johannesburg (and when to skip the crowds)
December and January are peak season. Schools are out, domestic tourism spikes, and hotel prices in Sandton jump 30-40%. The Joburg summer also brings afternoon thunderstorms from October through March. dramatic but brief, usually clearing by evening. The Rand Carnival and festive markets around Melrose Arch make it lively, but book rooms by September or pay the premium.
June and July are genuinely great months to visit. Days hit 18°C, nights drop to 6°C, and the city is dry and clear. Hotel rates fall to $65-130/night across mid-range properties. The Joburg International Motor Show in October and Arts Alive Festival in September are worth planning around. both fill up Sandton hotels fast, so book 6-8 weeks out.
Day trips worth doing from your Joburg hotel
The Cradle of Humankind at Maropeng is 50km northwest on the R540. about 45 minutes from Sandton without traffic. It's one of only two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Gauteng and genuinely impressive. Combine it with the Sterkfontein Caves and you've got a full day out that costs R200-300 ($11-16) per person in entry fees.
Soweto is 30 minutes southwest by Uber from Sandton. Vilakazi Street in Orlando West is the only street in the world to have housed two Nobel Peace Prize winners. Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Go with a local guide rather than wandering solo. Half-day guided tours run R400-700 ($22-38) and most hotels at the concierge desk can book them.
How to pick a Johannesburg hotel that's actually safe
Security is the variable that other hotel sites won't talk about directly. In Joburg, it matters more than thread count. Look for properties with 24-hour manned security, secure underground parking, and perimeter fencing. All 10 of our vetted picks have this. The northern suburbs corridor. Sandton, Rivonia, Rosebank, Melrose, Illovo. is where reputable hotels cluster for a reason. Anything advertising 'minutes from Park Station' or 'in the heart of downtown' needs a closer look at which street it's actually on. Check Google Street View before you book. That 3-minute check has saved people from genuinely bad experiences.
Joburg's best hotel neighborhoods ranked honestly
Melrose North tops the list for walkability and atmosphere. The Melrose Arch Piazza is one of the few places in Joburg where you can stroll at night without stress. it's a private precinct with full security and a good mix of restaurants and bars. You're about 10 minutes by Uber from Sandton City and 8 minutes from the Rosebank Gautrain. The catch: hotels here start at $140/night.
