Gyeongju isn't like other Korean cities. There's no skyscraper skyline, no neon shopping district. What you get instead is 2,000 years of Silla Kingdom history sitting right at street level. burial mounds in Hwangnam-dong that you can walk around, stone Buddhist carvings scattered across Namsan Mountain, and Bulguksa Temple looking exactly as it has for 1,300 years.
Base yourself in Bulguk-dong or near Gyochon Hanok Village for your first stay. You'll wake up 10 minutes from Bulguksa and won't need a taxi until day two. Skip the hotels near Gyeongju Station. you'll spend half your trip in cabs.
Bomun Lake or City Center: which side are you on?
This is the real decision in Gyeongju. Bomun Tourist Complex has the big resort hotels, Bomun Lake walking paths, and Gyeongju World theme park. City Center puts you 5 minutes from Tumuli Park, Cheomseongdae Observatory, and Anapji Pond. They're about 8 km apart. not far, but far enough to matter.
Our take: City Center wins on culture, Bomun wins on comfort. If you're spending 3+ nights and want a real resort feel, Lahan or Hyundai Hotel in Bomun at $260-450/night is worth every won. One or two nights? Stay central and save the taxi money.
The Gyeongju neighborhoods worth knowing
Hwangnam-dong is the heartbeat of the old city. Tumuli Park is right here, and Hwangnambbang bakery on Hwangnam-daero has been selling wheat pastries since 1939. Bulguk-dong sits further east near the forested hills, closer to Bulguksa Temple and quieter than the center. Gyochon Hanok Village, between the museum and the city core, is the most atmospheric place to stay if you want to feel Gyeongju rather than just see it.
Bomun Tourist Complex is its own world. purpose-built for tourists in the 1970s, it still delivers on amenities and lake views. Avoid booking in the unnamed stretch between Bomun and City Center: it's all budget motels with none of the walkability of either area.
Getting around Gyeongju without losing your mind
Bus 10 from Gyeongju Bus Terminal runs all the way to Bulguksa Temple and takes about 35 minutes. it's ₩1,500 and stops at the key sites along the way. Taxis are cheap by Western standards: City Center to Bomun is ₩8,000-12,000, and drivers generally know the main temples without needing directions. Cycling is the local secret. rent from any of the shops near Cheomseongdae for ₩3,000-5,000/hour and cover the flat city core in an afternoon.
We've seen this mistake hundreds of times: tourists assume everything is walkable because the map looks compact. Seokguram Grotto is another 3 km uphill past Bulguksa. take Bus 12 or share a taxi. Don't attempt Namsan Mountain in flip-flops either; the southern trailhead at Tongil-ro is the easiest entry point.
When to book and what to expect to pay
Budget hotels in Gyeongju run $45-85/night year-round. Mid-range jumps to $110-210/night, and the Bomun luxury tier sits at $260-450/night. Those numbers shift fast during cherry blossom season (late March to mid-April) and Chuseok week. budget options sell out weeks in advance and mid-range prices rise by 30-50%.
October is arguably the best month to visit. Temperatures drop to 12-18°C, the Gyeongju World Cultural Festival fills Bomun Lake with lanterns and performances, and prices haven't yet hit their autumn peak. Book Lahan or Gyeongju Tower Hotel 4-6 weeks out for that window and you'll get reasonable rates with ideal weather.
What to eat and where to sleep near the food
Gyeongju's food scene centers on Hwangnam-dong and the streets around Cheomseongdae. Ssambap restaurants. rice wrapped in leafy greens with a dozen small side dishes. are everywhere on Wonhyo-ro, and a full meal runs ₩8,000-12,000 per person. The night market near Gyeongju Bus Terminal opens around 6pm and runs until midnight: tteok-galbi, hotteok, and grilled corn for ₩1,000-3,000 a piece.
If you're staying at Sky Hotel in City Center or Gyeongju Tower Hotel in Hwangnam-dong, you're already in the middle of the best eating. Bomun resort guests should budget ₩15,000-25,000 for a taxi into the city for dinner. the resort restaurants are fine, but they're not what Gyeongju food is about.

Bomun is Gyeongju's resort district, purpose-built in the 1970s along the eastern shore of Bomun Lake. It's polished, green, and surprisingly pleasant to walk around. The 8 km lakeside path is legitimately beautiful, especially in April when cherry blossoms line the water.
Four of our picks are here: budget-side Gyeongju Hilton Motel, mid-range Commodore Hotel and Gyeongju Kolon Hotel, and the top-tier Hyundai Hotel and Lahan Hotel. That spread means you can access Bomun at almost any budget. though the $45-75/night motel is a very different experience from the $290-450/night Lahan.
The one honest downside: you're 8-12 km from Cheomseongdae and Tumuli Park. Bus 10 connects Bomun to City Center in about 20 minutes, and taxis run ₩8,000-12,000. It's manageable, but you will need to plan transport every day.

This is where Gyeongju's ancient core lives. Tumuli Park's royal burial mounds are in Hwangnam-dong, Cheomseongdae Observatory is a 12-minute walk away, and Anapji Pond is another 8 minutes east. You can do all three before most tourists have finished their hotel breakfast.
