Choosing where to stay in Granada
The Alhambra hill is the right base if the Alhambra is your primary reason for visiting. Eurostars Washington Irving on Paseo del Generalife is 5 minutes walk from the entrance. Alhambra Palace Hotel on the slope below it has the most dramatic city views from its terrace. The trade-off is that you are 20 minutes from the city center restaurants and bars.
The Albaicin and Realejo are better for travelers who want atmosphere. Hotel Casa 1800 in the lower Albaicin has unobstructed Alhambra views from the rooftop and is the best romantic stay in Granada. The Realejo sits between the Alhambra and the center, making it the most practical base for combining sightseeing with good evening eating.
Getting Alhambra tickets. what actually works
Book at alhambra-patronato.es as soon as your dates are confirmed. Tickets release about 3 months ahead. The Nasrid Palaces entry is timed to the hour, so book the time slot you actually want rather than whatever is left. Morning slots, especially 8:30am, have the best light in the palace rooms. Evening slots (after 6pm in summer) are beautiful but the Generalife gardens close earlier.
If tickets are sold out. which happens regularly in peak months. check the official site at midnight Spanish time, when cancellations from the previous 48 hours are released. Do not buy from third-party resellers. The ticket is non-transferable and requires ID verification at the gate.
Eating in Granada: the free tapas guide
Granada's free tapas tradition makes it one of the best-value food cities in Spain. Every drink you order at most bars comes with a small free tapa. not bread or olives, but a real small dish. The Realejo neighborhood has the best density of bars doing this genuinely well. Calle Doctor Barraquer and the streets around Plaza del Campillo are the right zone.
Budget 20 to 25 euros per person for an evening of bar hopping in the Realejo and you will eat more food than you need. Avoid the tourist zone around Plaza Nueva for this. they do the free tapas but the quality drops. La Salchicheria on Calle Rosario is a charcuterie wine bar that does the best single-glass experience in the city. El Bar de Eric on Calle Navas is consistently the best tapas bar in the center.
Day trips from Granada
Sierra Nevada ski resort is 32 kilometers from Granada, a 45-minute bus ride from the center. The ski season runs December to April and ski rental on the mountain is around 25 to 30 euros per day. In summer the same roads give access to high-altitude hiking trails. The village of Pradollano at the base is functional rather than beautiful.
Cordoba is 2 hours by high-speed AVE train from Granada train station on Avenida de Andaluces. Single tickets cost 15 to 25 euros. The Mezquita in Cordoba is the second most important Moorish monument in Andalusia after the Alhambra and genuinely worth a day. Nerja on the coast is 1.5 hours by bus. the Balcon de Europa viewpoint and the Cuevas de Nerja prehistoric caves are the draws.
The Albaicin on foot. a practical guide
Start at Plaza Nueva and take Carretera del Darro (the river path) east past the El Ladrón de Agua hotel. The Carretera del Darro is the most atmospheric street in Granada, running along the Darro river with the Alhambra cliff directly above. After 15 minutes you reach the Paseo de los Tristes, the best evening spot in the city for a drink with views.
From there, climb the steep lanes to Mirador de San Nicolas. The view of the Alhambra and Sierra Nevada behind it is the defining image of Granada. Go at sunset and stay for 30 minutes as the light changes. The minibus C3 from the top of the Albaicin back to Plaza Nueva runs until midnight and saves the downhill walk on slippery cobbles.

At 310 to 520 euros, it is expensive but the experience of walking the Alhambra grounds at dusk with no other tourists is impossible to replicate at any price elsewhere.
Hospes Palacio de los Patos on Calle Solarillo de Gracia is the best luxury option in the city center. The spa with its Roman pool is exceptional. Hotel Casa 1800 in the Albaicin is the best value luxury option at 145 to 230 euros. the rooftop Alhambra views and intimate service compete with hotels at double the price.
