Port Elizabeth is where the ferry drops you and where the island's only real town sits. Don't expect a beach-resort experience in Port Elizabeth proper. The waterfront is beautiful for sundowners and people-watching, but if sand is the priority, you'll be walking or taxiing. Budget options like Keegan's Guesthouse on Lower Bay Road make sense if you're using Port Elizabeth as a base for island-hopping, not a beach retreat.
Friendship Bay: where to actually stay
Friendship Bay is Bequia's best all-around neighborhood for a hotel base. The beach is long, calm, and lined with coconut palms. You're 10 minutes by taxi from the ferry terminal in Port Elizabeth, which is close enough to day-trip into town without being stuck there.
The Friendship Bay Hotel sits right on the sand and is the best-value property on the whole island. Bequia Beach Hotel is a few hundred meters east along Friendship Bay and steps it up to full resort territory at $180-320/night. Both face the same water. The price difference is real. decide what you actually need.
Lower Bay: the quieter beach pick
Lower Bay is a 10-minute walk over the hill from Princess Margaret Beach in Port Elizabeth, or a quick water taxi from the main dock for about $3. It's smaller and calmer than Friendship Bay, and the vibe is local. De Reef Apartments are right on Lower Bay Beach and consistently outperform expectations for $100-150/night.
There's one bar, one beach, and almost no hawkers. That's the point. If your idea of a good day is a rum punch at De Reef's beach bar followed by a snorkel off the rocks, you'll love it. If you need options within walking distance, Lower Bay will frustrate you by day 2.
Industry Bay and Spring Bay: the remote picks
Industry Bay is on Bequia's southwest coast, about 20 minutes by taxi from Port Elizabeth. Sugar Reef Bequia sits right on Industry Bay beach, which is one of the least-visited on the island. You're not walking anywhere from here, and that's the entire appeal.
Spring on Bequia in Spring Estate sits above Spring Bay on the island's Atlantic side. It's a former sugar plantation and the grounds are remarkable. The tradeoff: Spring Bay is rougher water than the Caribbean side, and getting to Port Elizabeth costs $20-25 each way by taxi. Go if the setting justifies the isolation.
When to book: Bequia's seasonal reality
The Bequia Easter Regatta in April is the single biggest demand spike of the year. Admiralty Bay fills with yachts, every decent hotel sells out weeks in advance, and rates jump hard. Book 4-6 months ahead for that period or avoid it entirely if you want any negotiating room on price.
June through November is hurricane season. Most years Bequia avoids direct hits, but September and October can bring heavy rain and rough seas. Rates drop 25-35% and the island is genuinely quiet. If you're flexible and don't mind a rainy afternoon or two, October at Sugar Reef or Spring on Bequia is excellent value.
Getting around Bequia without a car
Water taxis run between Port Elizabeth's main dock and Lower Bay all day for $2-4 per person. They're the fastest way between those two points. For anywhere else. Friendship Bay, Industry Bay, Spring Bay. you're taking a land taxi, which runs $10-25 depending on distance.
Dollar vans (shared minibuses) run from Port Elizabeth up to Mount Pleasant and toward Paget Farm. They're cheap at $1-2 per ride but run infrequently and stop early.
