Central Kiruna is your anchor. The new city center around Lars Janssonsgatan and Hjalmar Lundbohmsvägen has the bus terminal, the best restaurants, and the relocated Kiruna Church. all walkable within 15 minutes.
Don't make the mistake of staying right near the old mine district around Gruvstadsparken and expecting a proper town around you. The relocation is ongoing, and that area is patchy. Scandic Kiruna on Hjalmar Lundbohmsvägen and Kiruna Stadthotel in Central Kiruna are both solidly in the working new city. Start there, get oriented, then consider a day trip to Jukkasjärvi or Abisko.
The honest guide to Northern Lights hotels
Every hotel in Kiruna claims Aurora views. Most are overstating it. City-center light pollution on Hjalmar Lundbohmsvägen means you're not seeing much from your window unless conditions are extreme.
Camp Ripan on Campvägen in northern Kiruna is the best in-town option for Aurora access. they run guided night tours and the grounds have minimal light interference. But if the lights are your only reason for coming, go straight to Abisko. The Arctic Gourmet Cabin in Abisko National Park sits at the base of Nuolja Mountain, and the Aurora Sky Station cable car is literally minutes away. That's the move.
Kiruna on a budget: what's actually worth it
Kiruna Camping & Guesthouse on Campingvägen runs $55-80/night and is genuinely solid for what you pay. It's about 2 km from the new city center, so factor in a 25-minute walk or a $10 taxi into town.
Yellow House Hostel in Central Kiruna at $70-95/night is the best budget value on this list. you're walking distance from everything and the communal setup means you'll meet other travelers who've already figured out the bus to Abisko. We've seen people blow their whole trip budget on an average mid-range hotel when these two would have left them money for the Icehotel tour or an Aurora safari.
When to book (and when to wait)
Northern Lights season from late January to mid-March fills up 3-4 months in advance. The Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi on Marknadsvägen sells art suites a full year ahead. We've seen this mistake hundreds of times: people decide in November they want a February trip and find only $500+/night leftovers.
Summer is genuinely undersold. June and July in Kiruna bring the Midnight Sun, hiking season on the Kungsleden trail starting at Abisko Turiststation, and hotel prices 20-30% lower than winter peak. If you're flexible on season, a July visit to Camp Ripan or Björkliden at off-peak rates is one of Swedish Lapland's best travel values.
Beyond Kiruna: when to base yourself elsewhere
Kiruna city is a practical base, but it's not the most atmospheric place to sleep. If your itinerary is Aurora-heavy, consider basing yourself at Aurora Safari Camp on Råne älv or in Abisko rather than commuting from Central Kiruna nightly.
Björkliden Fjällanläggning at Björkliden Ski Resort, 115 km west of Kiruna on the E10, makes more sense as a base if skiing is your main focus. The resort has its own lifts, and you won't be burning 2 hours of daily driving. It's a $175-240/night commitment, but the tradeoff in convenience and scenery on Lake Torneträsk is worth it.
Kiruna's hotel scene: what's changed recently
The ongoing city relocation has reshuffled the hotel landscape considerably. Several older guesthouses near Bergmästargatan and the original town core have closed or are operating on borrowed time. Always verify your hotel's current address before booking. this is not a typical destination where addresses stay stable.
The upside: the new city center around Lars Janssonsgatan is genuinely nicer than the old one, with proper pedestrian infrastructure and better restaurant access. Hotels like Kiruna Stadthotel and Scandic Kiruna were built with the new urban plan in mind. They feel intentional in a way the old city never quite did.

Jukkasjärvi sits 20 km east of Kiruna on the Torne River. The village is tiny. maybe 500 residents. but the Icehotel on Marknadsvägen has made it one of Sweden's most recognizable addresses. Every room is rebuilt from scratch each autumn using ice harvested from the river.
Staying here at $290-600/night is a genuine once-in-a-lifetime thing, not just a marketing line. The warm rooms (yes, they have them too) are a fallback if you can't handle -5°C sleeping temperatures. The ICEHOTEL 365 section stays frozen year-round using mechanical refrigeration, so you can do this in summer too.
