The Medieval Ring Wall: Visby's Greatest Asset
The 3.4km ring wall surrounding Visby's old town is one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in northern Europe. Built in the 13th century, it stands 12 meters high in places with 44 towers. Walk the full perimeter in 45 minutes.
The wall is free to walk along at any time. The best experience is at night or early morning when the day visitors are gone. 200+ rose bushes climb the ancient stone, which gives Visby its nickname.
Inside the Walls: Medieval Streets and Ruins
The old town inside the ring wall has 12 ruined medieval churches and St. Mary's Cathedral -- the only intact one. The ruins are free to explore and particularly atmospheric at dusk when swallows circle overhead. The rose-covered ruins of St. Catherine's Church near the main square are the most photographed.
Gotlands Museum on Strandgatan is essential context for the ruined churches and trading-city history. The picture stone collection is unique to Gotland -- you will not see these anywhere else.
Medieval Week: August's Big Event
Medieval Week in mid-August transforms Visby into a full medieval experience -- jousting in the ring wall, market stalls, fire-eating, and 40,000 people in costume. The atmosphere inside the walls is remarkable.
The downside: hotels within the walls book up by May, prices double, and the ferry is fully booked. If Medieval Week is your reason for coming, book everything 3-4 months ahead.
Cycling Gotland: Beyond Visby
Gotland is perfect cycling territory -- flat, scenic, and with 200km of marked routes. Rent a bicycle at the harbor for 120-180 SEK/day. Tofta beach is 15km south (40 minutes cycling) for swimming. Lummelunda cave is 14km north.
The Gotland Ring (200km around the island) takes 3-4 days by bicycle with guesthouses every 20-30km. Even a 2-hour evening ride along the coast south of Visby adds significant value to your trip.
Gotland Food: What to Order
Gotland lamb (Gotlandslamm) is the island's best product and is on every decent restaurant menu. Order it grilled simply at Gutekallaren inside the ring wall for about 280 SEK. Baltic herring (strimming) is the other local staple -- cheaper and excellent at the harbor fish stalls.
Gotland saffron pancake (Gotlandspannkaka) with cloudberry jam is the essential dessert. Every bakery has it. The Visby market (Salutorget) on weekends has local produce including lamb, saffron products, and Gotland honey.
Practical Notes: Getting There and Around
Destination Gotland ferries run from Nynashamn (book early for July -- they fill up). The 3.5-hour crossing is pleasant with cafes and seating decks. You can bring a bicycle on the ferry for an extra 80 SEK.
Within Gotland, bicycles are the best transport. The island bus network is limited. Taxis in Visby are small numbers -- book ahead for airport and ferry pickups, especially in summer.
