Book in Village Center on Dorfstrasse. You'll be within 10 minutes walk of the Eiger Express Terminal, the Grindelwald Grund train station, and the main cluster of restaurants around Hotel Spinne. That walkability matters when you're tired after 8 hours on skis or trails.
Don't pay for a mountain-view room at a hotel that faces north. Check the orientation before you book. South-facing and west-facing rooms catch the Eiger and Wetterhorn light. Ask specifically which direction your room faces. We've seen this mistake hundreds of times.
The honest guide to Grindelwald neighborhoods
Village Center (Dorfstrasse) is noisy and convenient. East Village is quieter and slightly cheaper with Wetterhorn and Fiescherhorn views instead of the Eiger. Bodmi is for people who want to be above the village, directly on the Pfingstegg hiking corridor. Upper Grindelwald, past the Wetterhorn Hotel turnoff, is for those who genuinely want silence.
Lower Village fills out the western end toward Grund and is about 10 minutes walk from the Terminal. It's legitimately good value: Hotel Tschuggen sits there and offers some of the best per-franc mountain view quality on our list. Don't dismiss it because it's not on the main strip.
Grindelwald in winter vs. summer: which is better?
Winter (December-March) gets the Kleine Scheidegg ski area, the Lauberhornrennen buzz from nearby Wengen, and hotel rates between $130-480/night depending on the week. It's stunning but expensive, and the Village Center gets crowded around the main gondola stations from 8-10am daily.
Summer (June-September) is underrated. Trails to Bachalpsee from the First gondola and the First Cliff Walk draw big crowds by July, but you can beat them with a 7am start. Hotel rates drop to $80-255/night in most categories, the wildflowers are ridiculous in June, and Dorfstrasse actually feels like a village again rather than a ski resort processing center.
How to get to Grindelwald (and what to know on arrival)
From Interlaken Ost station, it's a 35-minute train ride on the Bernese Oberland Railway directly to Grindelwald. No transfers. Trains run roughly every 30 minutes. A single from Interlaken costs around CHF 11, or use a Swiss Travel Pass if you're covering more of the country.
If you're driving, note that Grindelwald has paid parking lots clustered near Dorfstrasse and the Terminal area. Don't assume your hotel has free parking: luxury properties like The Eiger and Grand Hotel Regina charge CHF 20-30/night for garage spots. Budget hotels often don't have parking at all. Check before you arrive.
Where to eat near your hotel in Grindelwald
Restaurant Onkel Tom's Hütte on Dorfstrasse is the local favorite for rösti and raclette. It's 5 minutes walk from the Hotel Spinne and a notch cheaper than hotel dining. For something more serious, Restaurant Schmitte near the Village Center does regional Bernese cuisine with a proper wine list.
Grab breakfast supplies at the Coop on Dorfstrasse before hitting the gondola. Buying lunch up at Kleine Scheidegg or Männlichen adds up fast: a simple meal at the mountain restaurants runs CHF 25-40 per person. Pack a sandwich and spend that money on a better dinner in the village instead.
Avoiding the most common Grindelwald hotel mistakes
Don't book the cheapest room at a luxury hotel to 'experience' the property. Interior rooms at the Grand Hotel Regina or The Eiger face the corridor and miss the entire point. The view rooms cost more for a real reason. If you can't stretch to a view room, book a different hotel and get the views from the terrace instead.
Skip hotels that describe themselves as 'near the station' without specifying which station. Grindelwald has two rail stops: Grindelwald village and Grindelwald Grund. They're 10 minutes apart on foot. Grund is great for ski access. The village stop is better for everything else. Confirm which one you're near before you commit.

Dorfstrasse is the spine of Grindelwald. Everything runs off it: the gondola terminal, the bus stop, the grocery stores, the best restaurants. Staying here means zero transport faff and maximum flexibility. It's the right call for first-timers.
The downside is real. Mornings get busy fast, especially near the Eiger Express Terminal. Hotels on the west end of Dorfstrasse near the bus depot deal with early noise. Book an east-facing room on an upper floor and most of that goes away.
