The Matterhorn View: Which Hotels Actually Have It
The Matterhorn faces the village from the south. Hotels on the eastern hillside (right side as you walk up from the station) have direct views. Hotels in the valley bottom or on the western side often have partial or no views.
Romantik Hotel Julen and Hotel Alpenhof both sit at the right position. The view from your balcony on a clear morning in January or July is the reason people pay Zermatt prices. Confirm the view direction when booking.
Getting Around a Car-Free Village
Zermatt bans all fossil-fuel vehicles. Electric taxis (small covered buggies) run from the station and cost 10-20 CHF for trips within the village. Most hotels arrange luggage pickup from the station. Walk from the station to most central accommodation in 5-15 minutes.
The MGB train from Tasch arrives at the Zermatt Bahnhof. From Zurich, the journey via Visp takes 3.5 hours. The Glacier Express from St. Moritz is 8 hours and spectacular.
Gornergrad Railway: The Essential Experience
The cogwheel railway from Zermatt station to Gornergrad at 3089 meters is the best train ride in the Alps. 29 4000-meter peaks are visible on a clear day. The Gorner Glacier lies directly below. Round trip costs 96 CHF.
Go at opening time (8am) for the clearest mountain views and the best light on the Matterhorn. The Kulmhotel Gornergrad at the summit has a basic cafe and the only mountain platform where the Matterhorn appears directly in front.
Ski Area: What You Need to Know
The Matterhorn ski paradise connects Zermatt with Cervinia in Italy -- 360km of marked pistes. Klein Matterhorn is the highest skiable point at 3883 meters. Day passes cost 92-102 CHF.
Skiing from Zermatt to Cervinia for lunch is genuinely possible -- the run down the Italian side takes about 2.5 hours. You need a passport and the international extension on your ski pass (15 CHF extra). Return by gondola from Breuil-Cervinia.
Summer Hiking: The Best Routes
The 5 Lakes Walk (Funfseenweg) is the classic summer hike -- 5 mountain lakes with Matterhorn reflections, 2500-2800 meters altitude, full circuit in 5-6 hours. Access by Sunnega Express gondola for 30 CHF one way.
The Schwarzsee route from the village (2.5 hours up, 2 hours down) is entirely on foot and gives the best ground-level Matterhorn view. A small chapel at Schwarzsee lake with the Matterhorn behind is the most photographed scene in Zermatt.
Food and Drink Without the Tourist Premium
The fondue tourist restaurants on Bahnhofstrasse charge 50-70 CHF for fondue. For the same quality at 30-35 CHF, go to Restaurant Stockhorn at the base of the Sunnega gondola or Blauherd mountain restaurant mid-mountain.
For lunch on the mountain, the Riffelberg Restaurant at 2582 meters is the best combination of view and value. Self-service for 25-35 CHF, sit-down for 45-60 CHF. The view of the Matterhorn from the restaurant terrace is one of the classic Alpine experiences.

The Gornergrad railway (96 CHF round trip) sells morning slots first -- the 8am and 9am departures sell out in peak season. Book online at gornergrahn.ch at least 3-5 days ahead for July, August, and February.
Confirm your hotel view before booking
Many Zermatt hotels advertise Matterhorn views but deliver partial or oblique views depending on room position. Email the hotel and ask which specific rooms face the Matterhorn directly and specify you want one of those.
Leave your car in Tasch, not Zermatt
Tasch is the car terminus 5km below Zermatt. Parking costs 15-17 CHF/day. The MGB train from Tasch to Zermatt runs every 20 minutes and costs 9 CHF each way. The journey takes 12 minutes.

Pack warm layers even in summer
Zermatt sits at 1620 meters altitude. Evening temperatures can drop to 4-8 degrees Celsius in July and August even when the valley is at 25 degrees. At Gornergrad (3089m), add another 15 degrees of cold. A down jacket is necessary year-round.
