Altstadt Niederdorf: The Atmospheric Old Town
The Niederdorf district (right bank of the Limmat) has Zurich's best medieval streetscape -- narrow lanes, Roman ruins at Weinplatz, the Grossmunster towers, and a dense concentration of cafes and restaurants on Niederdorfstrasse.
Hotel Kindli (17th-century house) and Hotel Adler are the best place-focused hotels here. Walk the Schipfe quay along the Limmat for the classic Altstadt view. The Lindenhugel hill above is free and gives panoramic views.
Zurich West: Industrial Turned Creative
District 5 (Zurich West) was Zurich's industrial heart until the 1990s. The Frau Gerolds Garten seasonal bar under the railway viaduct, the Viadukt market hall, and the Schiffbau theater building are the anchors of a genuinely interesting urban regeneration.
The 25hours Hotel here at $175-260/night is the most design-forward in Zurich. Langstrasse, the area's main street, has the most diverse restaurant options in the city -- Turkish, Thai, Lebanese, Ethiopian -- at better prices than the Altstadt.
Lake Zurich: Swimming and Sunset Walks
Lake Zurich (42km long) starts at the Quaibrucke bridge and extends south. The lakeside promenade runs 6km each bank -- the best flat walk in the city. In summer, the Badis (lake swimming areas) are free or cheap (7-10 CHF) and genuinely excellent.
The boat service on Lake Zurich runs from the Burkliplatz terminal. A round trip to Rapperswil takes 3 hours and costs 42 CHF. Worth doing once for the Alpine backdrop.
Kunsthaus: Switzerland's Best Art Museum
The Kunsthaus on Heimplatz contains the best collection of Giacometti sculptures in the world (170+ pieces), outstanding Expressionist works, and a substantial Monet collection. The 2021 extension doubled the museum's size.
Admission is 26 CHF. The Tuesday evening free admission (6-8pm) gets crowded. Best visited midweek morning. The museum cafe has good lunches for 20-30 CHF.
Day Trips: Three Excellent Options
Lucerne (45 minutes by train, 25 CHF) has the Chapel Bridge, the Lion Monument, and boat trips on Lake Lucerne. Rhine Falls at Schaffhausen (40 minutes, 17 CHF) is the most dramatic natural attraction within easy reach.
Stein am Rhein (1 hour by train) has Switzerland's most beautiful medieval frescoed facades on Rathausplatz -- largely unknown to non-Swiss visitors and completely free to walk through.
Eating and Drinking Without Overspending
Zurich has good food if you know where to look. The Tibits vegetarian buffet restaurant has multiple locations with lunch for 18-25 CHF. The Viadukt market hall in Zurich West has excellent prepared food stalls for 15-25 CHF. Eating at a restaurant at lunch rather than dinner saves 30-40%.
The Sprungli shop at Paradeplatz is the essential chocolate experience. For coffee, do as locals do -- the Cafe des Amis in Niederdorf charges 4 CHF for an espresso versus 7 CHF at tourist cafes.

The 3km lakeside walk from Bellevue square south to Tiefenbrunnen is the best free experience in Zurich. In summer, stop at one of the Badis for a swim. In any season, the Alpine backdrop (on clear days you see the Glarner Alps) makes it special.
Take the S-Bahn to Rhine Falls, not a tour
Rhine Falls at Schaffhausen is 40 minutes by S-Bahn from Zurich HB for 34 CHF return (or 17 CHF with a half-fare card). The walk from Schaffhausen station to the falls is 20 minutes on foot. Skip the organized tours which cost 60-90 CHF for no benefit.
