Fengjia Night Market: Taiwan's Biggest
Fengjia Night Market in Xitun District is the largest night market in Taiwan. 600+ stalls operate from 4pm to 1am daily around Feng Chia University. The market is famous for innovative food -- cheese potato spirals, taro ball soup, and the original Fengjia popcorn chicken.
Go at 4-6pm to beat the crowds and see everything. By 8pm it is shoulder-to-shoulder. The best strategy is to eat small portions at many stalls rather than committing to one full meal -- food ranges from 30 to 150 TWD per item.
Art in Taichung: More Than Just Night Markets
The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts on Wuquan West Road is free and has the best contemporary Taiwanese art collection. Allow 2 hours minimum. The museum's garden cafe is a good lunch spot at 200-350 TWD.
The Central District along Zhongzheng Road has a concentration of independent galleries and design studios. The Miyahara ice cream shop on Zhongshan Road is art masquerading as a pastry shop -- the 1927 ophthalmologist's office interior is worth visiting even without buying anything.
Sun Moon Lake: The Essential Day Trip
Sun Moon Lake (Riyuetan) is 60km southeast of Taichung in the mountains at 748 meters altitude. The bus from Taichung HSR Station takes 1 hour for 250 TWD and drops you at the Sun Moon Lake visitor center.
Rent a bicycle at the lake for 200-300 TWD and cycle the 35km perimeter trail in 4-5 hours. Alternatively, take the gondola (300 TWD one way) to Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village. The aboriginal restaurants near Wushe serve wild boar noodles and mountain vegetables unavailable elsewhere.
Bubble Tea: The Original Taichung Claim
Chun Shui Tang Tea House on Simen Road (4th Floor) claims to have invented bubble tea in 1986. The original shop still operates with a museum-like atmosphere and good quality tapioca milk tea for about 100-130 TWD.
The 50 Lan chain also originates in Taichung and has 500+ outlets across Taiwan. For quality over quantity, Tiger Sugar (caramelized tiger-stripe milk tea, 70 TWD) is the modern Taichung export that became a global trend.
Lukang: Day Trip to Old Taiwan
Lukang (Lugang) is 40km west of Taichung and has the best-preserved historic streetscape in central Taiwan -- Matsu Temple, the 9-turns lane (Jiuqu Xiang), and 300-year-old shop houses along Zhongshan Road.
The bus from Taichung Gancheng bus station takes 50 minutes for 80 TWD. The historic district is walkable in 2-3 hours. The Lukang scallion pancakes and handmade noodles are among the best in Taiwan -- the bakery on the main old street charges 20 TWD for a sesame cake.
Getting Around and Out of Taichung
The MRT Green Line runs from the HSR Station area through Xitun to Central District. Useful for hotel to Fengjia Night Market trips (Wenxin Station, adjacent to Fengjia). Beyond the MRT, taxis are cheap by European standards -- 100-250 TWD for most city center trips.
The THSR (high-speed rail) from Taichung to Tainan takes 25 minutes for 345 TWD. To Taipei 50 minutes for 375 TWD. The HSR station is connected to the city by taxi (250 TWD, 30 minutes) or BRT (60-90 minutes, 25 TWD).

Night Market Capital
Fengjia Night Market in Xitun District is Taiwan's largest with 600+ stalls. Yizhong Night Market in the East District is less touristy and better for traditional Taiwan snacks and beef noodle soup.
Art and Design City
The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts on Wuquan West Road is free and has the best contemporary Taiwanese art collection. The Central District galleries and the elaborate Miyahara ice cream shop add to a genuine art scene.
Best Value Taiwan
Taichung has lower hotel prices than Taipei with the same food quality. Peerless Hotel at $48-75/night in the Central District is the cheapest respectable option. Fengjia night market snacks run 30-80 TWD per item.
Day Trip Hub
Sun Moon Lake (1 hour by bus), Rainbow Village (15 minutes by taxi), and Lukang historic town (40 minutes by bus) make Taichung the best day-trip base in central Taiwan -- more accessible than Taipei for the main interior attractions.
Coffee and Bubble Tea
Chun Shui Tang on Simen Road claims to have invented bubble tea in 1986 and still operates the original shop. The Taichung cafe culture is excellent -- independent cafes in Central District Japanese-era buildings run 100-150 TWD for excellent coffee.
Japanese Colonial Heritage
Taichung has the best-preserved Japanese colonial architecture in Taiwan. The old police station (now a cultural center), Miyahara building, and the TRA station area have intact Taisho-era facades dating from 1895-1945.

Winter (Dec-Feb)
Coolest and most comfortable time to visit. Less rain than the rest of Taiwan. Night markets are at their best in cool evening temperatures. Chinese New Year (Jan/Feb) has specific festival foods at every stall.
Spring (Mar-May)
Good weather getting warmer. Cherry blossoms on Wuling Farm (50km east) peak in February to March. Sun Moon Lake is beautiful in spring. Occasional rain from April.
Summer (Jun-Aug)
Hot and humid. Night markets are most lively but daytime heat is intense. Typhoon risk from July to September. The mountains at Sun Moon Lake are 8-10 degrees cooler -- worth the day trip for the temperature relief.
Autumn (Sep-Nov)
Weather moderates after October. The typhoon risk largely passes by November. Good balance of temperature, prices, and activity. October is the best single month for Taichung.

Take the HSR to Taichung, not the express bus
The High Speed Rail from Taipei to Taichung takes 50 minutes for 375 TWD ($12). The express bus takes 2-3 hours for a similar price. The HSR is worth the premium for the time saving.
Go to Fengjia Night Market at 4-6pm, not 8pm
Fengjia operates from 4pm to 1am. The first 2 hours are far less crowded and the stalls are all open. By 7-8pm it is extremely packed. Eat early, leave by 7pm if you dislike crowds.
Visit Miyahara for the interior, not just the ice cream
Miyahara on Zhongshan Road is a 1927 ophthalmologist's office converted into an elaborate Victorian-Gothic ice cream parlor. The interior architecture is worth seeing even without eating anything. Ice cream is 150 TWD per scoop, pineapple cake sets from 250 TWD.
Book the Sun Moon Lake day trip bus in advance for weekends
The Nantou Bus Company runs the Taichung HSR to Sun Moon Lake service (250 TWD one way). On weekends it fills up -- book online at the Nantou Bus website or at the HSR station transport desk the day before.
Try Chun Shui Tang, not a chain bubble tea shop
Chun Shui Tang on Simen Road (4th Floor) is the original bubble tea shop from 1986. Basic milk tea with tapioca is 100 TWD. It is quieter than the street chains and the taro-based bubble teas are excellent.
Use Uber for intercity transport, not the bus network
Taichung's bus network is detailed but complex without Chinese reading ability. Uber within the city costs 100-250 TWD per trip and the app works perfectly. For Sun Moon Lake and Lukang day trips, the dedicated tourist buses from the HSR Station are the clearest option.

Is the Taichung MRT useful for getting around?
The Taichung MRT Green Line opened in 2021 and runs from the HSR station area through Xitun and the city center. Useful for going between the HSR station and the Fengjia Night Market area (Wenxin Station). Coverage is limited compared to Taipei -- taxis and Uber are often easier for specific destinations.
What is Fengjia Night Market like?
Fengjia is Taiwan's largest night market by stall count (600+). Located in Xitun District near Feng Chia University, it operates from 4pm to 1am daily. Famous for creative food: cheese potato spiral, strawberry mochi, taro balls, and the original Fengjia popcorn chicken (not breaded, just fried skin). Expect crowds from 7-9pm.
Is Taichung good for day trips?
Yes. Sun Moon Lake (60km southeast) is Taiwan's most beautiful lake -- buses run from Taichung HSR Station and take 1 hour for 250 TWD. Sanyi (35km north) is Taiwan's wood carving town. Lukang (40km west) is a well-preserved historic port town with 300-year-old temples. All are doable in half a day from Taichung.

Rainbow Village (Caihong Juancun) in the south of Taichung is a former military dependents village where 86-year-old artist Huang Yung-Fu painted colorful murals covering every surface. Free to visit, about 15 minutes by taxi from the city center. Open daily 6am-7pm. Gets crowded on weekends -- go in the morning.

Skip the hotels along the industrial corridors east of the city -- they are far from everything interesting. The tourist restaurants around the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts on Wuquan West Road charge tourist prices without the quality you find at the night markets or specialist shops.
