Klong Dao Beach vs Long Beach: which one is right for you?
Klong Dao Beach is the family default for good reason. The sand is wide, the water stays shallow for 30-40 meters out, and the strip along Klong Dao Road has everything you need without being chaotic. It's Koh Lanta's most developed beach, but that's a feature, not a bug, if you want convenience.
Long Beach (Hat Phra Ae) draws a younger crowd and has more energy after dark. The main stretch near Somewhere Else Bar and the Frog Bar area is where most of the island's nightlife concentrates, which makes it great for solo travelers and couples. But if you're a light sleeper or traveling with young kids, Klong Dao will suit you better.
Getting to Koh Lanta: ferries, minivans, and what actually works
The most reliable route from Krabi Airport is a shared minivan transfer to Hua Hin Pier, then a ferry across to Koh Lanta. Total time is about 2-2.5 hours and costs around $8-12 per person. Book through your hotel or at the airport desk. avoid random touts at the arrivals hall who quote the same price but pack you into older vans.
Between November and April, ferries from Saladan Pier also connect directly to Koh Phi Phi and Phuket, making island hopping easy. The Saladan-Phi Phi ferry takes about 1.5 hours and costs roughly $15. Outside high season the schedule drops significantly, so double-check departure times before planning around it.
Koh Lanta's south: Kantiang Bay and Klong Nin Beach explained
The further south you go on Koh Lanta, the more dramatic the scenery gets and the fewer people you'll share it with. Kantiang Bay is a wide horseshoe of sand backed by jungle-covered hills, and it's where Crown Lanta and Pimalai are based. Getting there from Saladan takes 35-40 minutes by scooter down Route 4245.
Klong Nin Beach sits between Long Beach and Kantiang Bay and has a quieter, more local feel. A handful of smaller resorts line the road parallel to the beach, and Sri Lanta Resort is the standout here. The sunsets from the rocks at the southern end of Klong Nin are some of the best on the island, and there's no entrance fee or crowd to deal with.
What to know about Koh Lanta's rainy season before you book
May through October is rainy season and most of the island shuts down. By June, over half the restaurants and resorts on Long Beach and Klong Dao Beach are closed, and Saladan itself is quiet. The seas get rough, ferry services to Phi Phi stop, and the beaches are mostly empty. Prices drop to almost nothing. $30-50/night for rooms that cost $150+ in peak season.
If you do come in the shoulder months of May or October, you'll get warm temperatures (around 27-30°C), the occasional sunny stretch, and virtually no crowds. It's not for everyone, but serious divers sometimes prefer May before the swell gets too strong. Just don't expect much to be open south of Klong Nin Beach.
Eating well in Koh Lanta without getting burned
The best local food is not on the beach. Head inland to the morning market near Saladan village off the main Route 4245, where you'll find khao tom (rice porridge) and rotee stalls from 6am for under $1 a plate. The beachfront restaurants on Klong Dao Road are convenient but priced for tourists. you're paying an extra 40-60% for the sand view.
For a proper dinner, Time for Lime cooking school on Long Beach does classes and runs a good restaurant. On Klong Nin Beach, Same Same But Different is a solid spot that's been there for years and doesn't inflate prices seasonally. If you're self-catering, the Lanta Market on the main road near Klong Dao serves as the island's most reliable mini-supermarket.
Day trips from Koh Lanta worth planning ahead
Koh Rok is the must-do. It's a pair of small uninhabited islands about 90 minutes by speedboat from Saladan Pier, with some of the clearest water in the Andaman Sea. Tours run $50-70 per person and include snorkeling gear and lunch. Book through dive shops on Long Beach rather than hotel concierges. the prices are usually 15-20% lower.
Mu Ko Lanta National Park covers the southern tip of the island and costs 200 baht ($5.50) to enter at the park gate near Ban Khao Mai Kaew village. The lighthouse trail at the far southern end takes about 45 minutes return and gives you views across to Koh Rok on a clear day. It's best visited by scooter, starting early before it gets hot. aim for before 8:30am.

Klong Dao Beach is 3 km of firm sand running south from just below Saladan village. The water is shallow and calm enough for kids most of the year, and the road running parallel. Klong Dao Road. has supermarkets, pharmacies, and a good mix of restaurants without being overwhelming. It's the most polished part of the island.
Hotels here range from mid-range to upscale. Lanta Casuarina Beach Resort sits almost at the northern end, about 8 minutes walk from the Klong Dao beach bar cluster. Rawi Warin Resort and Spa is the area's most popular property and the rooms facing the beach on the upper floors are worth upgrading for.
Avoid the inland guesthouses on the eastern side of Route 4245 near the Klong Dao intersection. they're a 15-minute walk from the water and not worth the savings. Stick to properties that are genuinely beachfront or within 200 meters of the sand.
