Haad Rin: party central, but know what you're signing up for
Haad Rin Nok. Sunrise Beach. is famous for one reason: the Full Moon Party. Every month, 10,000-30,000 people pack the sand for a night that runs until well past dawn. If that's your scene, great. Book close to the beach and budget for the price spike.
But here's the thing most travel sites don't tell you: Haad Rin Nok is actually a decent beach the other 27 days of the month. Quieter, cheaper, and only 8 minutes walk from Haad Rin Nai (Sunset Beach) on the other side of the headland. Seaview Resort sits on Haad Rin Nok itself and makes sense as a budget base outside party weeks. Just don't come here expecting tranquillity. even on quiet nights the generator buzz from the beach bars carries.
The west coast: best bang for your baht on Koh Phangan
Haad Yao, Hin Kong, Haad Salad, Srithanu. these four spots form the spine of Koh Phangan's west coast and cover every budget from $110 to $380/night. The road connecting them from Thong Sala runs about 25 kilometres north and is in decent condition by island standards. Sunsets here are genuine. Not Instagram-filtered, not hyped. Just the actual Gulf of Thailand turning orange every evening.
Haad Yao Beach is where the balance tips in your favour: 400 metres of clean sand, a handful of good restaurants right on the strip, and none of the party infrastructure. Haad Yao Bay View Resort has the best position on that beach. Further north, Haad Salad is more sheltered and draws couples and honeymooners who don't want a scene. We'd pick the west coast over Haad Rin for a first trip every single time.
Getting to Bottle Beach without losing your mind
Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat) has no road access. That's intentional, and it's why it's still worth visiting. You get there by longtail boat from Chaloklum village on the north coast, a 15-minute ride that costs about $4-6 each way. The boats run roughly 9am-5pm and leave when they have passengers. Don't cut it close to sunset.
Bottle Beach Resort is the main accommodation option on the beach and starts around $120/night. It's basic but the location carries it completely. The beach itself is a curved bay of white sand with no jet skis, no beach clubs, and no vendors. Bring cash. there's one small shop and the ATM situation doesn't exist. Chaloklum village is worth an extra night itself if you want proper restaurants and easier logistics.
Thong Nai Pan: Koh Phangan's most beautiful corner
The northeast coast takes commitment. The road from Ban Tai junction is 12 kilometres of twisting mountain track that takes 45 minutes on a good day. But Thong Nai Pan Noi beach on the other end is the payoff. Pale sand, clear water, and enough trees fringing the bay that it still feels unspoiled even at peak season. Anantara Rasananda is the anchor property here and it's worth every baht of its $380-650/night rate.
The nearby village between the two Thong Nai Pan bays has a few solid restaurants and a 7-Eleven that arrived in 2022, much to the mixed feelings of long-time visitors. Come for at least 3 nights. the travel time makes anything shorter feel rushed. And if the mountain road intimidates you, longtail boats from Haad Rin to Thong Nai Pan run for around $10-15 per person during high season.
Srithanu and the wellness side of Koh Phangan
Koh Phangan has quietly built one of Asia's most credible wellness scenes, and most of it lives in a 2-kilometre stretch of Srithanu on the west coast. Agama Yoga, The Yoga Retreat, and Samma Karuna are all within walking distance of each other. This isn't just yoga mats on a beach. there are serious teacher training programmes and multi-week detox retreats operating year-round.
Srithanu Wellness Retreat is the best accommodation in this area by a clear margin. At $260-380/night it sits at the top of the west coast price bracket, but it delivers: proper spa facilities, nutritionally serious restaurant menus, and a level of quiet that's hard to find this close to Thong Sala. The town of Srithanu itself has a farmers' market every Saturday morning on the main road and some of the best vegan food on the island. If wellness is even 30% of your reason for coming, this is where to base yourself.
Koh Phangan in low season: honest advice on the wet months
October is the toughest month. Rainfall peaks, the northeast coast gets choppy, and some smaller resorts actually close. September isn't much better. But here's the practical upside: rates drop 25-40% island-wide, and the west coast from Hin Kong to Haad Yao stays relatively sheltered because the mountains block the worst of it. You can find rooms at Salad Beach Resort for $95-120/night in October that cost $140-195 in February.
Chaloklum on the north coast actually benefits from the monsoon shift. when the southwest monsoon dominates, Chaloklum Bay faces away from the worst weather. We've seen people write off low season entirely and miss out on some genuinely good value. The trick is sticking to the west and north coasts, packing light rain gear, and keeping plans flexible. Boat services to Bottle Beach do stop when seas are rough, so factor that in.

Haad Rin is the most famous corner of Koh Phangan and also the noisiest. Haad Rin Nok on the east side of the headland is where the Full Moon Party happens. 10,000+ people on the sand every month. Outside of party week, it's actually a workable base: cheap food, easy transport to Thong Sala (about 20 minutes by songthaew), and a real beach.
Thong Sala Pier is the transport hub for the whole island, sitting on the south coast about 12 kilometres west of Haad Rin. The night market near the pier runs Thursday to Sunday and is worth a stop for food. Phangan Bayshore Resort is a 5-minute walk from the pier and makes solid sense for anyone connecting to other islands.
