Bophut vs Chaweng: Which side of the island is right for you?
Chaweng is louder, busier, and has more of everything. Bars, restaurants, pharmacies, tour operators. it's all on or just off Beach Road. If you land on the island at 11pm and want food and a cold beer, Chaweng is where you go.
Bophut is different. Fisherman's Village is only about 6 kilometers west of Chaweng, but it feels like another island entirely. Low-key restaurants line the waterfront, there's no nightclub strip, and the Friday Walking Street market draws more locals than the tourist markets near Chaweng. If you're staying for more than 4-5 days, Bophut gives you a better base.
Koh Samui on a budget: how to keep costs under $80/day
Start by staying in Bophut or Maenam instead of Chaweng. the same quality room runs $15-25 cheaper per night away from the main tourist strip. Samui Honey Cottages in Bophut is a solid example, coming in at $45-75/night with beach access included.
For food, skip the restaurants on Chaweng Beach Road and eat at the market near Chaweng Lake or the Lamai night market. full meals for 80-150 THB are easy to find. Rent a scooter for 250 THB a day and you've just eliminated the need for taxis entirely. That combination genuinely keeps you under $80 on most days.
The honest guide to Koh Samui's beaches
Chaweng is the longest and most famous. 7 kilometers of sand. but the central section around Chaweng Beach Road is packed with sunbeds and vendors. Head to the northern end near Chaweng Noi or the stretch in front of Mercure Koh Samui for more breathing room. Lamai, about 10 kilometers south, is shorter but more consistent in quality.
Choeng Mon in the northeast is genuinely beautiful. small, sheltered, and calm. but fills up quickly on weekends. Maenam on the north coast is long, flat, and quiet, and the water stays calm most of the year. Taling Ngam on the west coast is mostly rocky with pockets of sand, but the sunsets there are legitimately some of the best on the island.
Getting to and around Koh Samui without overpaying
Koh Samui Airport (USM) is privately owned by Bangkok Airways, which means they have a near-monopoly on direct flights. expect to pay more than you would at a typical Thai airport. Alternatively, take a train or bus to Surat Thani on the mainland and catch a ferry to Nathon Pier or Don Sak. The ferry crossing takes 1.5-2 hours and costs about 150-200 THB. a fraction of the airfare.
On the island, songthaews run the ring road clockwise and counter-clockwise. They don't always run on a fixed schedule, but you can flag one down on Route 4169 (the main ring road) easily during daylight hours. Grab apps like Grab Thailand work on the island too and give you upfront pricing, which cuts out the taxi negotiation entirely.
Day trips worth doing from Koh Samui
Ang Thong National Marine Park is the one day trip you shouldn't skip. It's a 42-island archipelago about 30 kilometers northwest of Koh Samui, and the snorkeling around Ko Mae Ko's emerald lagoon is world-class. Most tour boats depart from Bophut Pier or Nathon Pier around 8am and return by 5pm, costing $60-80 per person including lunch.
Koh Tao is further north. about 2 hours by high-speed catamaran from Maenam Pier. and is one of the best dive spots in Southeast Asia. PADI open water courses run $300-400 on Koh Tao, which is cheaper than almost anywhere else in the world for the same certification. Day trip diving is also easy to arrange from any dive shop on Koh Samui's main beaches.
When NOT to book certain areas of Koh Samui
Avoid Chaweng Beach Road hotels during Songkran (Thai New Year, April 13-15). The water festival turns the entire strip into a giant water fight from dawn to dusk. which is brilliant if you want that, exhausting if you don't. If you're visiting during Songkran and prefer a quieter experience, stay in Bophut or Taling Ngam instead.
The October-November northeast monsoon hits the east coast hardest.
